It really depends on how you define it and what side of issues you come down on. I define the "American dream" as: the pursuit of happiness through hard work and perseverance.
With this definition, no, the American dream is dead. There are simply too many people with an entitlement mentality that have their hands out for the dream to work. When I work my butt off and have a large chunk of my pay taken to be given to those who don't want to work... that in and of itself is the death of the dream.
Even if you don't want to look at the abuse of the welfare system, just the fact that successful people are no longer viewed successful but rather as crooked or evil, well, it doesn't give me a lot of hope for the resurgence of the American dream...
In that it still exists for a vast majority of Americans as merely dream? Yes.
