Is health insurance really worth the price?

For those who are not covered through work or unions, is private insurance really worth it, or does the cash discount work just as well ?

It is worth it. One simple accident with a hospital stay can be $25,000.  Unfortunately, being healthy isn't enough.

Being self-employed w/ pre-existing conditions makes it impossible to switch until Oct. Our plan has  a grandfathered status and is pretty much exempt from the early mandates of Obamacare ie coverage for colonoscopy, etc. Thanks for commenting.

In the past two years I've been hospitalized 4 times.  2 surgeries later......I am grateful to have private insurance, but it is through an employer.  I would never put myself in a position to go without it because I know what I've been through.

I was completely healthy, athletic and fit before anything happened too.  I never saw this coming!

It's definitely worth it for hospitalization and catastrophic care. We pay out of pocket for healthcare being self-employed, and there is a 7500 deductible per person per major incident.Sometimes I think a HSA would have been better.
