Do you think it is ok for adolescents to have access to health records ?
I am writing a paper about health reform, EHR (electrical health records, and adolescent confidentiality. Basically bringing about the unclear practices regarding provision of privacy for adolescents.
Provision of privacy for adolescents regarding their health care is unwise. Because peoples' brains do not mature until early 20s they are not equipped to understand all the ramifications of all health issues and handle the decisions that might have to be made. As well, they are not experienced enough to know if/when they are being manipulated by a health care practitioner, nor are they mature enough to be totally accountable for their own emotional, physical, and financial responsibilities. They need their parents' full awareness of their health records. That the health care industry tries to separate parents from their children and give young people the idea that they do not need their parents is criminal.
A 17 year old going to the doctor for birth control pills should be able to see their medical test results for an STD.
They DO NOT have the right to privacy from their parents. If your parents are liable for the bill and any baby you produce and your care if infected, no, there is no right to privacy.
If the person is 18 and paying their own medical costs, then they have the right to privacy.
