Hoping to Conceive?

Want To Increase Your Chances Of Having A Healthy Baby?

Hoping to Get Pregnant?

Here's some information which may help you acheive pregnancy and/or increase the likelihood of your having a healthy baby.

There are quite a few things you can do before you conceive to help prepare your body for pregnancy. Among other things, if you are either underweight or overweight, work toward achieving a better weight before you become pregnant. Also, eating healthy foods and being careful what you put into your mouth or onto your skin are very important. Smoking, drinking, and drugs aren't good for the baby, and should be stopped before conception, if possible. If you are taking any prescriptions (or even over the counter medications or supplements) on a regular basis, check with your doctor before conception to find out if they are safe for pregnancy. Also very important is making sure you are getting enough folic acid prior to getting pregnant, as one type of birth defect that is related to not enough folic acid in the body occurs before most women even realize they are pregnant.

DHA has been found in several studies to increase women's chances of having a healthy baby. In 2003, a study was published in "Pediatrics" which showed that 4 year old children whose mothers took a DHA supplement during pregnancy scored higher on intelligence tests than children who's mothers did not take the supplement. A 2004 study which was published in "Child Development" found that the babies of mothers who had high blood levels of DHA at the time of delivery had advanced attention spans through their second year of life. Although DHA is found in fish, pregnant women are often advised to reduce their fish intake because of the toxins in fish. Therefore, it may be a good idea to take a DHA supplement beginning before conception. Make sure any fish oil supplement you take is third party tested for impurities and has been found to be clean.

Read more about DHA during pregnancy.

Folic acid and DHA aren't the only important nutrients though, so make sure you are eating plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, and take a multivitamin for added insurance. There are books available which outline an ideal diet for pregnancy. To maximize your chances at having a healthy baby, begin following the dietary recommendations (but not eating for two!) at least three months before conception. In addition to getting your hands on a good book on the topic, I also highly recommend that you consult your doctor about how you can maximize your chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Although there are many brands of DHA, Nordic Naturals is a brand I highly respect. It was ranked number one out of the top ten Norway brands for purity and freshness! It's third party tests for heavy metals, dioxins, and PCB's, and found to be 750 times purer than fish! Nordic Naturals is the brand of fish oil I use for my own family.

What to do prior to conception to increase your likelihood of having a healthy baby

What to Expect Before You're Expecting
What to Expect Before You're Expecting
This book, in the popular "What To Expect" series, is about what you can do BEFORE you become pregnant to help increase the likelihood of a healthy baby. It's recommended that couples begin getting ready for pregnancy at least 3 months prior to conceiving, if possible. This book is a guide as to what steps you both should take.

Wondering If You're Pregnant?

Could you be pregnant?

Information and Links

Many women either dream that they are pregnant, or just intuitively feel that they are pregnant. Others notice spiritual signs - from Life, the Universe, or God - letting them know they are pregnant.

Other early signs of pregnancy may include tender breasts, unusual tiredness, missed periods, light bleeding during implantation, morning sickness, strange cravings, and frequent trips to the bathroom. Not everyone who's pregnant will experience all of these.

Check out some of these links below for further information.

Morning Sickness

Dealing With Morning Sickness!

I had mild morning sickness while I was pregnant with my second child, and for the most part, quickly eating a few crackers whenever it struck was all that I needed. But I have friends who have had very severe morning sickness which didn't end as they moved into their second trimester. In fact, some women can hardly keep anything down during pregnancy! If you, or someone you know, is experiencing severe morning sickness, check with your doctor or midwife. Find out if he or she has any tips for you, and also if he or she thinks you can try some of the tips mentioned in these books.
