Updated on November 14, 2013

Useful and Convenient Devices to Ease the Daily Living of Seniors

Shopping for an senior is often difficult. I love to give people something that will get used. Consider giving your parents or grandparents a gift that will be truly useful to them. Get them something that will make the daily tasks of life a bit easier and safer.

This list shows some great items that they will love. Someday they'll wonder how they ever lived without it.

They have probably already got all the picture frames and mugs that they will ever need. Why not give something a bit less novelty, and a bit more useful.

1. Kettle Tipper

The kettle tipper, also known as a jug tipper or pot tipper, is the perfect solution to safely pouring from heavy containers. Seniors will find a kettle tipper convenient and helpful, and using a kettle tipper greatly reduces the risk of burns from spilled hot water.

The kettle tipper can be used with a kettle of hot water, a jug of cold milk or juice.

2. Electric Jar Opener

3. Jitterbug Cell Phone

The Jitterbug

The Cell Phone Designed for Seniors

New cell phones are not easy for many seniors use. They have tons tiny buttons, and tiny print on a tiny screen, and they are not very easy to hear from.

The Jitterbug was designed to tackle all of these problems. It works like a traditional phone, with no complicated menus to scroll through. Also, there is an operator feature where you can have the operator dial for you - a saved number like "Call my daughter, Liz" or a new number you read them. This is convenient for people with low vision, or who may not be able to physically dial on their own.

You can also arrange for Jitterbug to call the phone to remind you to take your medications.

Keep things simple with The Jitterbug. A Jitterbug cell phone makes a great gift for family and friends on your list. Order today and get a FREE car charger.

Changing the channel and the volume are the two most commonly used functions on a remote control. Keep things simple with a remote that is not cluttered with a lot of buttons that will never be used.

7. SmartShopper Electronic Grocery List & Reminder

Magnetically attached to the refrigerator, or mounted to the wall, this grocery list device is quite handy.

Whenever you come across something you need to add to your grocery list (like when you are throwing away the empty cereal box), just push the record button and say what it is. When you are ready to go shopping, simply press print. The device will print a list of the items sorted by department in the grocery store (so you don't end up crisscrossing the store three times).

This will help you remember everything, and save you time and effort at the store.

8. Lightweight Wall-Mounted Cordless Hand Mixer

The walk from the car to the house may be short, but it poses an falling risk which you can easy be lessened by adding motion detector lights. The light will automatically turn on as you pull up to the house. Also, motion detector lights greatly reduce the chances of a home invaders from choosing your home.

Other Great Gift Ideas

Reachers

A reacher is always handy to have around the house.

When choosing a reacher, I would recommend avoiding the foldable ones, and the ones that you can lock closed. They simply do not last as long. I also prefer the ones with suction cups on the ends as they grab most items of various shapes.

Or the XBox Kinect

A new alternative to the Wii is the xBox Kinect system. This system has no hand controllers (so no chance of them throwing it through the TV accidentally).

I like the idea of Kettle Tipper, I have been thinking to get one so that it is easier for my kids to pour water from the heavy kettle instead of keep asking me to pour for them :)

You have a great selection of gifts for seniors here. I've never seen a kettle tipper, but I love the idea. It would also be good for kids when pouring from heavy milk or juice jugs.

What thoughtfulness you put in here for perfect gifts for seniors and some I didn't know existed. My Mom is about to turn 86, lives in the country and doesn't use a night light, I think your movement activated night light would give us kids some extra peace of mind and she'd actually use it maybe since it wouldn't be on all the time. The one other thing I've thought of getting Mom is a key finder and an extra to attach to her purse, those two things seem to be misplaced and it is so frustrating trying to find things. I love how you are choosing items that help encourage continued independence.

Thanks for the terrific gift ideas for our senior moms. My mom and I both LOVE her Jitterbug Cell Phone - very easy for her to use because it is so easy. And she loves her gardening activities so the garden chair is a popular option as well. Thanks for a fun visit for the Mother's Day quest :)

As I scrolled down the page, I couldn't help but think how many of these I would enjoy having in my house, and I'm not even a senior! Some are even great ideas for kids. I think for some, like myself, budget is the deciding factor, so the Roomba would be a distant dream! Another more affordable alternative to the Jitterbug would be the SVC (Tracfone's senior offering) - I gave it to my folks last year, and it was an immediate hit with the novelty of being connected anywhere, anytime.

Great ideas for this year...thank you!

I found a very useful gift to the elderly at www.just5.com. In fact, I gave my elderly mom the orange Just5 phone for her birthday. I love the fact that she can be independent again without worrying much about her safety because the phone has emergency response features. Plus, she is able to contact family and friends again because of this simple phone and all its senior-friendly features such as large keys and bright display.
