Updated on April 10, 2013

Do you miss the old days when there was a Drive in Movie Theater in a near by town? I know I do. Nowadays they are very rare and hard to come by. The good news is you can now have one in the comfort of your own Backyard - Technology has come a long way.

Can you imagine the look on Kids faces when you invite them to a Party and then show them a Movie in the Yard? They would absolutely love that and it is not as expensive as you think.

You can also hook up your Video Game System and play that outside - Now that is Fun !!

My Story...

I have been doing research on these Outdoor Movie Screens and Projectors for my Son's upcoming Birthday June. He is a January baby so his parties are always indoors. So this year I convinced him to have a belated Birthday Party. This way he can experience an outdoor Party with the Pool and BBQ, like my daughter always has since she is a July baby. So being I have made him wait for his party I want to make it Extra Special.

So I thought being he is 12 years old I need a more Cool Party Theme - I figured Swimming, Movie at Night Outside and Camping Out would be perfect. In addition to all that - I may even hook up the Video Games - YES you can do that too !!

He will be the first to have an Outdoor Movie at his Party and then of course my daughter will have one at hers in July. I also know this Outdoor Theater will get a lot of use at my house over the Summer - there are always kids here all summer long - I see many movies in our Future being watched while we swim, sit on the patio or watch from the fire pit. And who knows - people driving by may just stop to see what is going on and join us - lol

With that I figured I would share my research with others who may be looking for the same thing.

UPDATE - Backyard Movie Birthday Party

Since I created this page I had my son's Backyard Movie Birthday Party which was a HUGE success. We ended up playing Avatar which was a perfect movie to watch outdoors with the stars in the sky.

This Party was 7 Hours long full of so much fun and a great Movie at the end to finish it all off.

Airblown Inflatable Movie Screens

There are many ways you can create your Backyard Movie Screen - so there is something for all Budgets. The most popular are the Airblown Inflatable Movie Screens. They set up in seconds with a blower they come with and they are not that expensive.

Things to Consider:

~Make sure you have good sound because the Blowers can be noisy

~You will need room for the tie downs

~When choosing Size be sure your Projector can handle that and not lose quality

~They require Electricity - so make sure you can run some to where you will setting it up

***Always Read Reviews before Purchasing - it is always good to hear what others have to say***

Other Outdoor Movie Screen Alternatives

There are many other Movie Screen Alternatives like:

~A White Sheet, but you have to take into consideration the light going though it

~A Pull down Screen - you can find them available on Frames or Without

~The Side of a Shed, Garage Door or your House

I have seen many ways people set up Outdoor Movie Theaters - just do some extra research, see what fits in your Budget and what will work for you. For me I went with the Inflatable Movie Screen for the ease of set up and take down.

***Again - Always Read Reviews before Purchasing***

The Projector

Now to talk about the Projector - this is the most expensive part of an Outdoor Theater. There are many choices available, but you will want to get one that is going to give you a good quality picture. Keep this in mind - You get what you pay for - that is a great rule of thumb. If you go for super cheap that is what you will get.

I was lucky enough to find one on Craigslist and at a good price for a Panasonic Projector that originally sold for about $5000 and I paid $275.00 (amazing deal). Sounds crazy, but it is true. It is not a new model, but it stands up to all the ones being sold today. It has gotten great reviews and the picture quality is great. I would recommend it, but like I said it is no longer being sold and there are none on EBay.

Things to consider when looking for a Projector:

~Cost of Replacement Bulbs and how many hours each one lasts

~Sound Quality, but you may want to consider speakers as well

~Lumens should be at least 2000 and over

~Resolution - Make sure if fits your needs and at the very least 720p

~Hook Ups for Computer, DVD, Game Systems etc...

***Most Important is reading the Reviews and researching what your needs are***
