See's Candies

See’s Candies, a perfect gift for nearly everyone!

The deliciousness that makes up See’s Candies began in 1921 in California USA. The founders were Charles See, his wife Florence and of course, Mary See. His mother, Mary See, is pictured on the box. Mary See was the creator of the first recipes for the fine candy sold at the See’s Shops in California. She devised the first recipes for selling at her husband’s hotel.

The headquarters of See’s Candies is in California. For many years the See’s Candy shops could only be found in the western part of the United States. The candies are manufactured in Los Angeles California.

See’s Candies is well known as one of the first purchases by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire Hathaway modernized the See’s Candy business model. The product remained the same delicious hand crafted, excellent ingredient candies but now they had a significant presence on the Internet, took credit cards, and expanded to meet the needs of the customer. See’s Candies is now available overseas and in many airport gift shops. Although, for the most part See’s Candies is sold only in the fine See’s Candies stores because of quality requirements.

See’s Candies needs a well managed environment in order to maintain the fine quality and ingredients that create the superlative tastes. To that order they tightly control every thing from the highest quality ingredients to the finest in-house preparation, shipping, and selling. The candy is of a higher quality and not made up of the fillers and wax that cheaper candies contain in order to not melt. They are environmentally sensitive. So, they are protected at every step by the See’s Candy organization.

Visiting the Store

See’s Candies will offer you a taste of their famous chocolates. The kind and well trained employees are only too willing to entice you with their chocolate. It works. You want everything you taste.

You can purchase one of the many pre-packed selections. Many selections are in holiday appropriate packaging. Browse the shelves and select gift packs and personal candies.

See’s will also hand pack a box to your exact specifications. They have a long display counter of their nearly 100 kinds of chocolate.

We happen to be dark chocolate nuts and chews people. To that end we picked-up the flier on the types of chocolates, conferred with each other and then selected each piece individually. We might have been a bit bothersome to some poorly trained employees but, Irene was extremely patient with our selection. A pound of See’s Candies is about 20-24 pieces.

Besides being a well stocked store it is light, and fastidiously and extremely clean. I love the white and black décor both inside and out. Although, I think if I were an employee I would lobby for uniforms from some century near this one. Think early 1900s Harvey Girls as the style they emulate.

There is excellent parking at the Central Phoenix store as well. Most people will have to shop a mall store or an airport. Lucky us, we have a free-standing store to go to. We love this store. Kudos to Debra!!!

Shameless Promotion of our Favorite Items

Peanut Brittle is my husband’s most favorite thing. Not that you don’t have to fight him for your share of the dark chocolate nuts and chews too!

This Peanut Brittle is buttery, chewy, toothsome balance of sweet and salty that is perfect. What I don’t understand is how they can get the crunch, the brittle, the buttery sweetness all without that cloying teeth goo that other peanut brittle deteriorate to in your mouth. I may not understand how they get it this good but I can sure enjoy the brittle. That is, if I can wedge any out of my husband’s grasp!

Buy the biggest box you can because you WILL have to share with everyone a lot.

Dark chocolate nuts and chews are also a favorite in this house. Here is a bit of what we selected for our one pound box.

Roasted almonds dipped in dark chocolate

Dark California brittle, a hard toffee with almonds

Roasted salted peanuts in delicious dark chocolate

English walnuts also in delicious dark chocolate

Dark nougat, honey nougat with coconut and vanilla with almonds in dark chocolate

Dark cherry cordial

Dark Molasses Chip, molasses honeycomb chip in dark chocolate

Kona Mocha (because) it is coffee, chocolate butter cream and toasted coconut

And a white chocolate Polar Bear Paw, peanuts and vanilla caramel dipped in white chocolate

But you might like something different, so for your consideration:

Strawberry Cream, a strawberry butter cream with strawberries

Orange Bon Bons, an orange shell surrounding orange cream

Pecan Bud, pecans and vanilla caramel in milk chocolate

Rocky Road, honey marshmallows, English walnuts, and milk chocolate

Bridge Mix, miniatures of nuts, raisins, coconut, caramels, brittles, wafers, and nougats (makes me think of my Mom who loved Bridge Mix)

Well ,there are nearly 100 delicious candies to select from. You should take a look for yourself.

Gifts for you or Others

Here is a nice link for See’s Candies. The swell bit is that you can have the candy shipped directly to your out-of-town friends and family. That is, unless you can visit the shop at Camelback and Central here in Phoenix. Be sure to say hi to Debra and Hedy for me.

For some reason, I'm having a major chocolate craving....can't quite put my finger on it... Great hub and yes, I'm a fan of all candies--but especially the dark chocolates!

      Dear NMLady,

Thanks for a great hub, as always, and for rekindling precious memories. I have been a See's fan since childhood. Every Easter my Dad would send me one of their huge chocolate eggs. I often gave and received those delectable 1 lb. boxes as gifts. Then last year something happened. A friend gave me some Xocai healthy chocolate. Minimally cold-processed, it retains the cacao bean's natural abundance of antioxidants and doesn't add the "bad stuff" such as lots of refined sugar, fats, alkali, etc. that has turned one of Mother Nature's super-foods into mass produced, heat processed candy. A plant-based food, the beans when over-heated lose their powerful nutrients just as veggies do. It is delicious and we receive joy & benefits in every bite! You may find out more from some of my hubs, my Lady, and I think you'll be amazed and delighted! Stay enchanting...Linda

I remember Sees when my mother used to buy a one pound box for a dollar. It is by far the best candy out. I loved the caramel suckers and all the chocolates..Yummy. I felt like a walk down memory lane. I see the Sees Store everytime I jaunt down to Phoenix and so glad it is still there. Thanks for a great hub..Up and share. Do you live in Phoenix????
