For many, Thanksgiving opens the holiday season, anticipating Christmas, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Eide, Hanukkah... It's the day in which we put aside all concerns, eat until we can't stay awake, take warm, cozy naps, and root for our teams. Year after year we rise early, roast and bake, to go "over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house."

I would like to suggest that when we say grace on that day, after we thank our Creator, we pay homage to the beings who have lived on this earth without owning it, who consider giving the greatest source of honor, whose teachings set the example of how to live in harmony with nature, the Native American Nations who hold this land sacred.

One of the loveliest holiday traditions is sending greeting cards, an act of gentility and creativity. While it's wonderful to receive e-cards, nothing quite matches the feeling of opening the mailbox and finding a personally addressed and stamped envelope with our name handwritten.

Choosing - or designing - the cards and the envelopes, writing the greetings, signing our names allow us to express ourselves and show our esteem, respect and love to others.
