Best Gifts for Teachers Straight from the Horse's Mouth

Updated on June 25, 2014

Say Thank You to a Teacher with a Gift They Really Want

I've compiled some of the best gifts for teachers straight from the horse's mouth.

I have several family members and friends who are teachers, so I decided to take a poll. I asked "What are good gifts for teachers?"

The consensus was that gift cards were some of the best gifts for teachers. A gift card allows the teacher to splurge, maybe on the classroom for supplies they need to do a better job teaching and maybe on themselves as a treat.

I've also added some tangible items that any hard-working teacher will appreciate. Say thanks to your child's teacher this holiday season and give a gift they can use.

Gift Cards - Amazon Sells Gifts Cards in Any Denomination

Amazon is the go-to place for online shopping. And Amazon gift cards come in any denomination.

When you give a teacher an Amazon gift card, they can treat themselves to just about anything whether it's a new bathrobe or a new set of cookie sheets or an emergency kit to keep in the car.

Give a gift card and give the gift of choice.

Make a Handmade Card or Gift with Your Child for Their Teacher

Make a Thank You Card with Your Child - to Give the Teacher

Buy a ready made pencil holder or make a pencil holder with your child as a gift for their teacher. Include a potted plant or other thoughtful gift tucked inside to brighten the classroom all year long.

Make a handmade card for your teacher with your child. This was the number one mentioned gift that teachers said they liked receiving!

Avoid Coffee Mugs & Apple-Themed Items

One person commented that they knew a teacher

who had received an abundance of

coffee mugs and apple-themed items.

Two teachers agreed that these are not

the best gifts for teachers.

What you might think is cute may end up

as a dust catcher.

A thoughtful gift that is useful is a better option.

Let Your Child Make a Card

for That Special Teacher

Many of the teachers I spoke to said that they cherish handmade cards that students made for them through the years. Assemble the card making supplies for your child and let them spend an hour making a card that shows they care.

The card along with a small gift is a nice way to show how much their hard work and extra effort means.

Any practical gift for the teacher that they can use in the classroom is sure to be appreciated. Some examples include:

~ dry erase markers

~ boxes of tissues

~ art supplies that will get used like markers, crayons, scissors, paper

~ requested books or worksheets to be used by students

Avoid trite and cutesy gifts that will sit around and collect dust. The teacher will thank you!

Give Expo Markers - Or Other Classroom Supplies That Get Used Up

My daughter teaches high school calculus. She said a great gift would be Expo markers or some other classroom supply that the class goes through quickly. Most teachers have to buy these types of supplies themselves.

Ask your child's teachers what they run out of all the time and give them a useful gift that they need to teach your child.
