I think Valentines Day is a day that is designated to show your lover and others love and affection in a special way, on that special day, that we don't do on a regular day.
I think its a joke. Love should be expressed every day of the year. Valentine's Day is a way for companies to make money (cards, chocolates, flowers, restaurants, message parlors, etc.) It's also all about the women, despite the holiday being designed for both parties.
I was always under the impression that St. Valentine was a Catholic priest, and martyr (witness) of the Catholic Church.
During that period, the Roman Emperor needed soldiers, and was completely against marriage. He needed single men to be completely devoted to serving him in battle.
The priest, Valentine, rebellious against the Emperor, secretly celebrated couple's marriage. For that, he was martyred.
