Can anyone tell me about Halloween. What is it all about?
Halloween is a popular American holiday that dates back thousands of years to ancient pagan harvest festivals that centered on feasts, honoring their gods and dead loved ones, and preparation for the darkness of winter to come. It evolved through the years as the early Christian church moved All Saints Day to Nov. 1 to try and convert the pagans, and as people immigrated to the new world, they brought many of their traditions with them. It eventually became a night of mischief and frolick before trick-r-treating was reinvented to give kids something constructive to do that night.
The imagery of witches, black cats, and ghosts associated with Halloween comes from the belief that this is a time of year when it is easier to communicate with spirits of the dead and a lot of spooky motifs thus became tied to it.
