What are some unique things to do if you are not able to spend thanksgiving with family members?

Spending holidays in ways that are not considered the norm can be really beneficial in some cases.  I've written about the topic but not listing title here as it's not considered kosher.  People can have different reasons for stepping outside the box on holidays, but how is the question they face once the decision is made (or thrust upon them).

You could volunteer to help serve meals for the homeless at a local soup kitchen facility.

Visit a nearby nursing home and visit anyone else who doesn't have family to visit them. I've done this with my children while visiting a relative there, and we dropped off flowers or cards. Some people cried because someone, anyone, visited them. And unlike the homeless shelter, there's no competition for that act of charity.

Tamara, that's a very thoughtful idea, to consider and think of others who have no one for the holidays.  Thanks for sharing.

There were occasions where the residents said no one had visited them except to pay the bills or Mother's Day.

Thanksgiving has passed and we had family over for a wonderful celebration.  However, when we are not able to join with family and friends, we usually enjoy a meal out and take in a movie.
