Created in the 1970s by George Lucas, there are now six Star Wars films in 2 triologies, and another film in the works. The epic space stories are set in a fictious galaxy, inhabited by humanoid and non-humanoid characters.

The movies tell the story of Luke Skywalker together with his Jedi mentors Ben "Obi-Wan" Kenobi and Yoda the Jedi Master, his friends Princess Leia Organa and Han Solo, (a smuggler with a sidekick called Chewbacca), plus two trusty androids C-3P0 and R2-D2 battle against the evil Darth Vader and the Emperor of the Galactic Empire.

Luke Skywalker is the main character in the original Star Wars Trilogy. He starts as a young farm boy, trains to become a Jedi Knight and joins in the fight against the evil Galactic Empire.

Han Solo is a smuggler and mercenary. With his first mate, the Wookie Chewbacca, he is reluctantly drawn into the was between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. Star Wars creator George Lucas described Solo as "a loner who realizes the importance of being part of a group and helping for the common good."

Darth Vader is the chief antagonist in the original trilogy and one of the main protagonists in the prequel films. In the first he is depicted as a Dark Lord, a Jedi Knight seduced to the Dark Side. In the prequels he is shown to be Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight and father to Princess Leia and Luke.

R2-D2 is an endearing droid in the Star Wars movies. In the first film he carries a message from Princess Leia to Obi-Wan Kenobi and it is the accidental retrieval of this that sets Luke off on his adventure to find Obi-Wan.

C-3PO is a nerdy protocol droid who is, by his own account, fluent in "over six million forms of communication". Threepio, as he is affectionately known, and his sidekick, R2 are two of only four characters to appear in all six Star War films.

Yoda is the oldest and wisest member of the Star Wars universe. He is responsible for training Jedi Knights.

In the original trilogy, he trains Luke Skywalker to fight against the evil Galactic Empire while in the prequels he is the Grand Master of the Jedi Knights, a leading member of the Jedi Council and a general in the Clone Wars.

In 2012, The Walt Disney Company purchased Lucasfilm and the rights to make a new Star Wars Episode VII film. (George Lucas retains creative control.) The film will feature many of the original cast members, including Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO). Star Wars number 8, as yet untitled, is scheduled to be released in 2015.
