A Kitty Named Cletus

Updated on July 27, 2014

Cletus alone did live

from the litter mama cat did give;

he likes to play on the rail

and chase his mom’s tail;

truly, he is quite active.

But shy is our kitty named Cletus -

he won’t even come out to greet us!

He stays close to his mom;

dogs and thunder he runs from,

and his trust for people never increases.

Birds alone Cletus braves to near,

he leaps on them without fear,

and oh yes, the fish no doubt

that we dutifully ladle out,

and the milk that he guzzles like beer.

Cletus is the only living kitten that our old mama cat gave birth to this year. Rowdy, health and strong, Cletus was named for the title character from the short story, "Cletus Rawlins" by friend and fellow Hubber, Will Starr.

    Alecia, thank YOU for reading and the comment. Cletus has a must interesting personality, too - he has completely got over his shyness and is a real cuddle bunny to his humans now!

    Aww, that is so sweet. I also like cats, but for some reason, they don't like me...

    Fun poem Beth.' Cletus' looks like one of our cats 'Basil' and his mom 'Sable' looks like our mother cat 'Fanny'. Voted up.

    Such a delightful poem about Cletus -- I love that name which I first heard in Will Starr's story. Marvelous poem, Beth. Lovely cats, too.

    I like this frisky little fellow. I don't appreciate my neighbor's cat's bird hunting, but cats will be cats! Great poem!

    That was both funny and beautiful Beth. Just wait until Cletus grows older - then I bet you're in for it! I voted that up, shared it and pinned it.

    Cletus looks like a real survivor, just like his namesake. Well done, Beth!
