As Summer Slipped Away
Updated on August 22, 2013
I moved across the meadow
to stand near the grassy edge
of the cool, still pond.
Sparrows chased a life of leisure overhead
and sunlight reflected on a mirror of water;
liquid glass in the morning sun.
A breeze pushed against me,
teased a few errant strands of hair around my face,
and danced with the fabric of my skirt.
I closed my eyes,
feathery lashes kissing my cheeks
as I lifted my face to the sunlight.
My once porcelain skin,
now tinted by the season,
tasted the kiss of a summer promise.
I inhaled.
Ahhh...the presence of nature.
Flowers heavy and fragrant mixed and mingled
with an undertone of a summer rain;
a hinted promise lacing the air.
Long neglected grass brushed across my bare feet
like silken ribbons,
caressing me into a fog of peace.
I surrendered.
Breathless.
Motionless.
At ease within the world.
It all turned beneath my feet yet I was unaware;
floating in my blissful slumber,
my eyes closed to everything but the moment.
Again, summer faded all too soon.
