Campfire | A Poem

Updated on June 01, 2015

Liz loved camping with her family from an early age; her dad was a very experienced outdoorsman who taught her lots of useful things.

CAMPFIRE

A piece of night;

A million pixel-points

Shine down through

A feathered chimney of pine.

Hypnotic flicker

Of friendly flame,

Logs snap as sparks

Rise to try and meet the stars.

Mountain hush of night birds

And whispering stream

Entrance the soul with

Cool, comforting contentment;

They immolate

And wash away my cares.

    Ouch... lazy, lazy imagery I have to say, so much that I must have dozed off Zzzzzzz... Until I woke up and found my shoe on fire!!! I hated that burning sensation felt as a result of hazy, lazy warmth... Ouch!

    Well done, you have captured the romance of the outdoor fire, one I'm happy to share while fishing on our current clear winter's nights... Now... did you get a permit Lizzy? Haven't seen you for awhile stranger... nice to come back to the warmth of eloquent wordsmithing... Got you there for a second didn't I :) Up 'n up Take care

    Hello, Pearldiver - Aww, so sorry your shoe caught fire; I hope you had your pail of water and shovel nearby as required! ;-)

    Glad you enjoyed this oldie. (Actually, all my poems are oldies; I haven't written any new ones in a long time...)

    Well then Lizzy... there's a statement of inspiration screaming to be set free. Don't worry I didn't like the shoe anyway... having two left feet, it didn't fit properly anyway. Let me know in July if you want an invite to publish some of your poetry in NZ... I'm sure it will be well received... there... that might bring your muse back. Take care & cheers for your smile... Thank you, Pearldiver, for that kind invitation. I will try to remember, and contact you then. If my brain doesn't go on an AWOL vacation, that is. ;-)

    I'll remind you... don't worry mine's like an elephant's... Hahaha I just wish I hadn't ended up with the trunk as well.

    It was interesting, though I was not sure if I should give it a thumbs up. I did since most of it was beautiful it was only one line which made me unsure. I voted up, shared and pinned it.

    Hi Kevin--thanks, I think! ;-) Glad you at least semi-enjoyed this poem, and I thank you for the vote, share, and pin.

    Let me explain. I liked the entire poem - until I reached the second from last line. "Sacrifice" did not fit in with the rest of it. I did not understand why that was there.

    I see. Well, I did not use or intend the word in that way; I only mean strictly in the 'burning' sense, so my cares are burned away. If there is any 'sacrifice' involved, then I am 'sacrificing' cares and worries; not a bad thing to do. ;)

    Oh. I had looked up the meaning (3 explanations) to see if it meant what I thought. They matched. So I tried a second place totally different from the first and I received basically the same ones. I tried anyway.
