Gone Away Again
The humming birds have gone~
Away again~
There is a chill in the air~
The delicate bird could not bear.
I have put on a second layer~
To keep the nip at bay~
My flip flops I suppose look odd~
As this is an unusually cool day.
As I sit in the space on the porch~
I often frequent during my days~
I see nature change~
As the fall moves in~
While the summer fades farther away.
The resident squirrel has been aloof~
Not showing much of himself for~
The last few months~
However now he~
Ravages the propeller seeds~
From the Japanese maple tree.
I am on more caution now~
As I brave the newly cold air outside~
For thoughts of the bears~
To visit more often~
Scavenging food~
Preparing for their winter sleep~
In the caves some where?
I notice now the sun starts in the morning~
Shinning in a different spot. ~
Starting its dawn~
Playing in the dew drenched leaves~
With bold rays splashing through the varied trees!
Another season as life goes on~
Comes at us fast~
When I had hoped for slow~
We age each passing spell~
I know oh to well.
Aging is no different for my Siamese kitty~
Who now I notice rarely ventures past the porch steps~
As it is obvious at fourteen she has now become deaf. ~
Yet I wonder and chuckle a bit~
How the yard’s remaining chipmunk~
Knows? ~
Seeming to make the cat a fool~
As Mister Chipmunk made his home~
Right under the porch stoop~
Easily living under poor pussy’s nose~
While the cat sleeps on the settee~
The chipmunk freely comes and goes.
Now my coffee cup again empty~
I glance around once more~
Before I go back inside the kitchen door~
Again I see the Humming bird feeder~
Hanging there with plenty of clear red food~
Indicating over again the absence of~
The delicate bird~
Who I not too long ago saw~
Playing, eating and going up and down~
Mating in the summer’s sun with out error or flaw.
Again I pine for the summer heat~
Realizing only that the autumn now has it beat~
Knowing soon more things will change~
Even I soon will have to put something on~
My bare feet which will freeze~
Rather just not looking strange.
The humming birds have gone~
Away again~
There is a chill in the air~
The delicate bird could not bear.
