Quote by Lucinda Williams

"The perfect man? A poet on a motorcycle."

A Poem

Riding free

Not once looking back

Now moving forward

With such ferocity

The rumbling roar of the pipes

Drowning out those words in her head

Leaving behind that life full of dread

Behind her,

She leaves her trail of tears

Along with long-forgotten fears

The road of life ahead does lure

Against her, the wind buffets, pounding her soul

Responding, the bike, to her body’s every move

Alone with her thoughts

Never having to defend

The warm sun kissing her face

Brings a smile

And she is content to just ride for awhile

Behind her,

She leaves her trail of tears

Along with long-forgotten fears

The road of life ahead does lure

Now shifting gears on the open road

And in life, smelling the world she travels through

While sitting on her steel horse

To the top of the hill with senses in full delight

Then down again, adrenaline flowing

Such an experience of motion through fresh air

Passion fills her heart, which is now without a care

Behind her,

She leaves her trail of tears

Along with long-forgotten fears

The road of life ahead does lure

Leaning into twisty corners

While riding, she is awake and aware

Her mind and heart now free

From the prison made by man

On this glorious morn

Tasting the ocean’s cool, salty spray

Now looking forward to each new day

Behind her,

She leaves her trail of tears

Along with long-forgotten fears

The road of life ahead does lure

Alongside lazy rivers she floats

While wild animals stare

Passing fields of green pleasure

Intense is the wind

Into which she drives madly

Now wet with the scent of fresh fallen rain

She feels cleansed from all of past’s pain

Behind her,

She leaves her trail of tears

Along with long-forgotten fears

The road of life ahead does lure

2013 Marks The 20th Anniversary of The Trail of Tears

My sister rode in the Trail of Tears several years ago, which was an unforgettable experience.

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the Annual Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride began in 1994 by Bill Cason to mark one of the trails used during the 1838 removal of Native Americans from their homelands in the Southeast to Oklahoma. The ride started at Ross’s Landing in Chattanooga, TN with eight riders and ended with 100 riders in at ride's end. TOTRAI's ride has now grown to over 150,000 riders, making it the largest organized motorcycle ride in the world.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Fact Sheet just Released

According to the National Traffic Safety Administration, in 2011, 4,612 motorcyclists were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes—an increase of 2 percent from the 4,518 motorcyclists killed in 2010. There were 81,000 motorcyclists injured during 2011, a slight decrease from 82,000 in 2010.

Unusual Fact

According to insurance claims, the most dangerous day of the year to ride a motorcycle is April 5th.

My sister is not wild in any sense of the word. I just thought this song fits with this hub, and this video with the female rider.

Never Looking Back

Since my sister set out on her new journey in this life, never looking back, I have been so inspired by her strength and courage.

She has been looking forward to a much brighter and happier future.

Each day she sets out and takes the steps towards that future by getting herself healthier in mind, body and spirit. She is seeking out her passion in this life.

She has inspired both my husband and I to eat healthier, and one day I may share one of her amazing recipes here.

In the field in which my sister seeks to get into, there is a requirement of physical agility/ability.

Back in January, when she first came to visit with us, she could not even do one push-up, but now is able to do over 25!!! She can now run a mile and a half in 13 minutes. She is so fit now, both physically and mentally, there is nothing she cannot accomplish.

Go ahead, my lovely sister, and spread your wings and soar like that eagle! I love you. You are beautiful.

I dedicate this hub to my lovely sister.

      Morning Lovely Peg,

I'm so glad you found this one to read this day and that you loved it. Yes, she is certainly a brave woman and has been throughout her life. She is a fighter and determined to find happiness on her terms.

I appreciate your most generous comments as to all I've included here.

I love this for so many reasons - for your sister's strength and bravery, for her courage, for the prose, the songs, and most of all your respect for her in her choices. What a wonderful tribute to your family. The history of the Trail of Tears was truly fitting.

      Hi Marlene,

Thank you for sharing about your dad and brothers here. You are brave to give it a try even. I know you trust your dad and brothers to keep you safe. As I stated, I am a big ole chicken when it comes to motorcycles and am even afraid just to sit on one by myself LOL. You're right about the community spirit among riders for sure.

This poem is really a metaphor about moving ahead in life no matter what obstacles one may face and to bravely do so.

I am glad you enjoyed this piece here.

      Blessings always

My dad and all my brothers own (and owned) motorcycles. My dad taught me how to ride, but I never took to motorcycles as a sport or otherwise. What a lovely poem about your sister on her motorcycle. There is such community spirit with motorcycle riders and it is shown by their dedication to the Trail of Tears. I really enjoyed reading all about your sister and this interesting piece of history.

Thank you so much for leaving such enthusiastic comments here! You are most generous and kind. I am so glad you loved it every bit.

My sister did tell me that I captured the feel of riding on a Harley, even though I have never ridden one myself. I can still hear the roar of the Harley though vibrating inside my chest when one pulls up near.

Hope you are enjoying a lovely Sunday there.

What a beautiful tribute to your 'released to happiness' sister! It seems you both must have special kinetic abilities - and I mean that divinely inspired type of thing for living life. Your poetry was subtle with information, but vivid with expression! An inspiring subject, sisterly loyalty and love, and written in heartfelt hopeful words! Your repetition of the 'chorus' was quite notable - I loved it every bit!

Well, dearest Faith, I certainly hope that someone is running you a nice, relaxing bubble bath, to melt away the cares of the day, whilst they pad downstairs into the kitchen to throw you both together a lovely, surprise dinner, followed by an invigorating shoulder and foot massage, then to escort such a lovely Duchess to her chambers where tweeting bluebirds change you into your night attire, and lay you down like Snow White, as a prayer is offered for you, your family and friends, as your Guardian Angel sentinels outside your door to protect you from the vampires, for the best night's sleep of your life.

This is such an inspiration Hub; and the love for your family especially your Sister can not be denied. The imagery stands out and I like the repetition of the one verse you penned so beautifully - it's as if the reader is there on the ride with almost feeling the rush that comes with it. Your verbiage stands out in wonderful phrases such as "Steel Horse", along with the cleansing from pain. Such a wonderful tribute to a great cause that she rode for and how she is still blessing all of you with her wisdom and grace. Fantastic - voted up - !

      Hi my sweet friend, Debbie,

At least you are not afraid to ride on the back, like I am!

I am so proud of my beautiful sister for moving ahead in her life! She is very brave, beautiful and strong. It is so important that family pull together during difficult times!

I have always loved that song too and thought it appropriate, although my sister is not wild in any way. This video shows a female rider, so I chose it.

      Hi shanmarie,

Thanks for reading. Yes, family must pull together and support one another during great time of need. I was attempting to show how my sister is changing her life all around from not only just emotional well being to physical good health by eating right and taking care of herself . . . total body, mind and spirit in terms of her moving forward in her new journey through life and leaving the past behind.

I added in about the actual Trails of Tears being she rode in it one year and it related back to the title of the hub.

Yes, I am scared to ride or drive, well, I don't know how to drive and I am too chicken to learn! haha

As for me and riding, I think I'll decline. Unless maybe I'm the one driving. I've never been on the back of a motorcycle doing more than about 10mph. hahaha Chicken? Maybe. When my life is that exposed, I'd rather be in control. haha

      Hi Dearest Vinaya,

So nice to see you here this day! Never thought of that thought, but you're right, we should leave the past behind, as it is just that, the past, and live this day to the fullest, as it may be our last day, as one never knows.

We can cherish our good memories, but those that are not so good, let us just leave them behind and move forward.

I’ve never ridden a motorcycle; I’ve always been afraid of them. Reading your poetry, I can better understand the freedom and passion one may feel while riding in open spaces. It is a beautiful tribute to your sister.

The annual motorcycle ride to commemorate the Trail of Tears is amazing. I can’t imagine that it now consists of over 150,000 riders.

Sometimes, I see riders without helmets, and I shudder. I was shocked to see the number of states that don’t have a universal helmet law.

The photos of your sister and family are beautiful, Faith. Thank you for sharing this with us.

How cool! I would like to be your sister's best friend, Faith, accompanying her on those trips. Although I am as scared as a cat hanging above water, I absolutely love the excitement. I may be going on a bike trip before the end of the year. The boyfriend is already organising what's to be organized. But I am too scared - and at the same time excited - to ask any question. It is like being between the devil and the deep-blue see. I will give him this quote: "Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly." Fortunately he is a responsible man, and he will be extra-responsible with me as a passenger. Then it will only be a matter of, "What will be, will be." Now how exciting is this?

      Hi Faith

Fabulous hub and such a kind tribute to your sister. I'll confess and say that I'm not normally a poetry fan but this could certainly change my mind.

It looks like you have a wonderful family and that is such a lovely thing.

I am however a biker fan and love the machine that your sister is sitting on.

Great job, great hub and have a great day.

      Hi alcosin,

Yes, my sister is very brave to move on in this life with her life to a brighter future, and I used the motorcycle as a metaphor here.

I truly believe I am one who could not ride a motorcycle, for one, I am too scare, and secondly, I am not coordinated enough : ) as I know I would head straight for that tree. I know it would be thrilling and terrifying for me at the same time!

Thank you for your lovely words, and I appreciate the vote up.

Almost anybody can ride a motorcycle, making what your sister did easy enough for anyone to do. Yet, we all come up with excuses of why we can't do it. Your sister is quite brave and kudos to her for going on her Trail of Tears tip. Most of us can only sit back in wonder and adminiration. Voting this Up and Beautiful.

Oh Faith Reaper, I wish I'd have seen this when you published it; it almost got by me! This is absolutely awesome on so many levels! The poem is absolutely beautiful; makes me want to get on a bike and just go... leaving any and all troubles behind.

      'Alone with her thoughts

      Never having to defend

The warm sun kissing her face' ~ That is priceless; I love it!

How nice of you to mention the lovely Wayne Barrett's poem too, which I absolutely enjoyed.

You have such a wonderful and beautiful family; the way you speak of them is admirable and you and they are most certainly blessed. I'm so happy to hear that your sister is on such a glorious new path and that she inspires you, but you must no doubt inspire her as well! That picture with the sun shining through is almost magical isn't it? I wish her all the best!

I love the quotes; there are some really fabulous ones! The videos, the pictures; you've got it all right here Faith Reaper!

You're such a delight and inspiration to everyone!

So great to see you here this day!

I am so glad you like my tribute to my brave, courageous and lovely sister. Thank you so much for leaving such wonderful comments.

Yes, I just pictured her leaving all those tears behind and moving forward to a much brighter and happier future, and being she has a Harley, and has participated in the actual Trail of Tears, that title did really seem most appropriate. And thank you for saying that too.

She loves to ride, but I am a big chicken. However, maybe one day I will be brave enough to ride, only if she teaches me in a wide open field, where I cannot run into a tree : ) LOL, as I am sure I would do such : ( no doubt.

that being said .. i can see that you are like me ....admiring your siblings for their courage to express themselves in their own way. I lost my sister to cancer, but she went to the lord... fighting all the way and was very courageous and forthcoming about her condition. .

writers of poetry like you and I see and realise the the lives of constant struggle and change even slightly and almost want to live our lives through them .. but we forget how beautiful our own lives are ..unless we look (as you did ) about and see the younger ones who come behind .. Your sister is a beautiful person with a great family .. just like you ..!!!

Your poetry is comforting and inspirational.

The statistics you share on helmet laws are sad to me. In addition to all the fatalities, the injuries and paralysis that could be avoided with the safe use of a helmet. Thank you for raising awareness on this issue as well.
