I dreamt - There is a way out (A very short story)
It was a Friday evening, I went home tired and I asked the maid to fix me a left over dinner. Famished, I was! As I ensconced in the dinning room and was about to ingurgitate the not so appealing dinner, I saw a big fat cockroach lying dead in the gravy. My stomach turned and I decided to walk to the club house for a pizza, I left home in a hurry. Unabashed of my natural need, I dashed across the zebra-crossing and was hit by a speeding car. I flew........ inexorable misfortune?!
I felt I was floating as I saw faces with mouths agape, I asked what they wanted but they didn't seem to be able to hear me. Then the light faded with the fugacious noise, it was dark and I was scared! But shit! If only I did not have to attend to stupid mistakes that my colleagues made and worked late; If only the roach did not crawl into the gravy and if only the lazy maid checked the food - I would not be in this kind of shit now!
"Always rant about what could have been done, don't you?"
"Am I dead? Who are you? God? or Satan?" I demanded.
"Does it really matter? Maybe I am your conscience!" said the voice,
"God, I wish you are, so you can grant me a wish, a miracle!" I pleaded,
"Oh! How strange! An atheist, you have always been! And it is God you want to see now?"
"Ok, ok! Show me what you got! You can read the future, I am sure you can fix the past! Bring me back to life!" I challenged.
It went silent for a second and the voice came back and said, "Reading the future is not a miracle, it's a perspicacious virtue! A single mom who's working two jobs, and still finds time to take her son to soccer practice, that's a miracle. A teenager who says "no" to drugs and "yes" to an education, that's a miracle. A counsellor failed 200 times to help a wayward youth, persevered and succeeded on the 201st time, that's a miracle! People want me to do everything for them. What they don't realize is "they" have the power. You want to see a miracle? Be the miracle!............"
The thunder shook me out of bed in cold sweat, it was the same ceiling I was staring at a month ago when I repeatedly said "there is a way out!". Someone visited me last night and reiterated - Be the miracle, make things happen.
