If I Could Fly
If I were the smallest bird, I would still be so happy,
Not just a colourful silly kite and with its stringy tail.
I'd fly way up to the heavens, up so high in the sky,
All the heights there for me, just being mine to scale.
I'd not ever dare return to that ground far down below,
No more sadness, then, ever would be mine to know.
I would soar up on high with my strongest two wings,
So sure in seeing more than ten-thousand new things.
I'd never to be concerned with building a base,
Naming craters marked upon the moon's face.
Maybe fly in its light, in brightening up the night,
There, never to run away with a dash, in fright.
I would then so savour each moment in that sky,
Breaking all the rules of flight, everyone to defy.
I'd dip and glide, on currents to ride, the day long,
By night, swing by stars, sing a "Big Dipper" song.
Escaping from this place where we once were so free,
Feeling cool breezes in my face, it's there I'd rather be.
True freedom to experience, well away from the crowd,
Granting this wish, I'd express best, by shouting aloud.
My remembering those old times, when I felt so all alone,
Cooped up, all enclosed, as an airmail letter, never flown.
The rules and regulations that seem to cut off all your air,
A hustle and bustle of elbows, the traffic we all must bear.
Every morning I'd greet the brightest, a rising sun,
When I plan each new course before it has begun.
A way of saying hello, by the dipping of my wings.
As I caress every cloud, absorbing all joy it brings.
I'd give thanks to the creator, of his wisdom to show,
His generosity, to birds, flight's gift on them to bestow.
Unlike those who have to walk or to hide down below,
Living in houses with grey tops, lined up all in a row.
