Saying Goodbye

"I can't do this anymore, you know. You've always known this day would come. I may not be able to create the music the way I once did, but our life will be a song," a quavering voice whispered resolutely.

The heart knew it was useless to go on alone, though there were many to inspire, many dear ones to care for, it was too late. No one should be expected to live in such pain. No one should bear the burden of giving and giving while the world around them greedily takes.

Luna had lived this way for longer than she knew how to measure. She had been muse, inspiration, the sweetness poured into millions of fertile creative minds. Her inspirations had helped to create melodies and lyrics that had adorned billions of hearts, captivated endless emotions, and carried many a lover's hopes and aspirations on time's enchanted breezes.

But only one had stolen her heart. Only one had so encapsulated all of her hopes and dreams. Now he needed her more than any of the others possibly could. She was no good to them anymore without him. It felt as if all of the magic she had to give was dying with him.

Gone were the simpler times. Gone was the dream of a haven for children in which they could have a day to live out their wildest dreams. A misunderstood mission. A heartbreaking ending.

Michael had tried to make the best of life, after fighting ridiculous accusation after ridiculous accusation. He was weary. His children were the light of his world, and he rarely had dreams of Luna anymore. They had faded into a haze of addiction.

The one time he saw her clearly in his mind, he had called out through the dark, pulled her into his dream and knelt beside her, asking the most important of questions. He waited for her answer, but awakened before hearing it. That had been the last dream of her. He barely remembered it.

Just two years later, he was preparing for the comeback of his life. Fifty. Where had the time gone, what of his youth? It hadn't been a carefree one, but there were certainly happier days to number. Yet his gratitude for each moment with his three precious children was unbounded.

Still, there is a loneliness that only the magic of one other person, the answer to your heart's questions, can ever fulfill. That was not to be in this lifetime, though he never gave up hoping, visualizing her, wondering if she would ever show up, looking for her in strangers faces, but never finding her.

This morning was different. He'd just been through an exhausting rehearsal, and was still unable to fully relax into much needed sleep. He'd hoped that the usual methods would bring some relief from the insomnia that had hounded him for years.

Something was different this time. Something had gone wrong, and yet he felt so incredibly relieved, lighter, free of the heavy burdens that life had used to weigh him down.

No! He didn't want to leave his darlings. No. This couldn't be. He wasn't ready. This was not as he'd planned! Yet his heart was full and his pain was drifting far away from him. He was truly free for the first time in such a long time.

He thought of her.

Fall to Earth...

Luna had decided earlier that morning. She would go to him, as a human. She would lift him up. She would answer the question she'd taken years to answer. She would divest herself of one magic, trading it for another, one that had become infinitely more important to her.

It was not nearly as difficult as she had imagined.

When she awoke, as though she had just fallen through time, Luna found herself by a clear pool. The land around her looked fairly unkempt and not as she'd remembered in her dreams. She hadn't expected to find Michael here, of course. Yet she'd wanted to come to this once magical place. She'd wanted to start here, contact him in his world - telephone him - yes, that's how it worked here - and have him meet her! What a surprise this would be!

She felt exuberant. The breeze felt delicious on her back as she began to dance around the pond like a girl in a 1950's musical. There was no one to see her. The morning sun smiled upon her. She felt wondrously alive and full of new purpose.

Luna noted that many of Michael's beloved statues were missing. "We'll bring them back! We'll bring everything back!" she sighed and danced again. Earth felt wonderful! The trees seemed to dance with her.

Then it happened. She suddenly stopped in mid-step. A beautiful leaf, not an ordinary green, but emerald flecked with dazzling golden sparkles, danced in front of her face. She knew it couldn't have fallen from the trees surrounding her. It was too different. Still it was falling. It fell so slowly, she could have reached out and saved it from it's inevitable landing. She could have grasped it in her hand, caressed it and kissed its brilliance. But she couldn't move. She stood so deathly still that the pounding of her own heart filled her with terror.

On a journey all its own, the golden speckled leaf seemed to turn and glide past Luna, as if begging her to follow. It taunted her, for she couldn't move a muscle. She was frozen with fear.

Something had gone wrong. She felt Michael's presence with her instead of where he ought to have been, miles away, happily dreaming. As she broke from her trance, she felt her head turn, allowing her eyes to follow the leaf's path. It gracefully sat down on the glistening water of the pond. The water began moving ever so slightly, and then as if the leaf had stirred it, a face began to appear within the water's ripples.

Luna moved forward to see the vision on the water, a vision she, now human, should not be able to see. Spirits were in a different realm from her new world. That is as it should be. Only one could have found her here now. Only one. She wanted to feel happy, but she only felt sorrow. She knew he couldn't be doing this without her help, unless their roles were now somehow inexplicably reversed.

What had she done? What had he done? Why couldn't they just be together?

Luna's mind was spinning. Her heart was breaking. She thought she'd finally come up with the perfect way to save him, but she was too late. She thought he'd hold on, somehow sensing that she was on her way. Why couldn't he have just waited a little while longer? How could she live in this strange world without him? She didn't remember how to be human. She needed his help.

She wanted to cry. She wanted to scream. She suddenly just felt angry! Michael had a message to give to her, and she couldn't even listen.

In the depths of her being, Luna knew that this couldn't be the end, yet with all that she'd gone through to be on earth and now realizing the irreversible transformation that Michael had made, she couldn't imagine a happy ending... not yet. Not now. She was too hurt. She felt Michael had abandoned her at the worst possible moment.

She felt the sadness coming, sweeping over the world like a tidal-wave of pain. Waves and waves of anguish felt by millions of people.

"Michael! We were so close to making it right! How could you leave NOW?"

If only Luna could let the sorrow fall away. She needed to listen to Michael. She needed to know what he wanted to tell her. There was another way. There was something that she could do.

If only she would listen...
