Instant Karma - Now I Can See - Poem By Cathy Nerujen
About this poem:
Instant Karma ought to be a dark poem, but in essence it becomes a poem about how good things eventually balance out the not-so-good things in life. My own relationship with my father was up and down, "back in the day". I never knew of, or felt or even believed in karma until I met two amazing people who have become such a big part of my life, and made me a better person. They made me open my eyes to the bigger picture. All the other things I was not seeing. This is biographical. This is about things changing for the better, and these two special ladies. This is a poem about karma.
Instant Karma - Now I Can See
Once was a time –
back in the day -
when I couldn’t see –
that I was “that” way -
that was the time –
when I couldn’t talk –
and I wouldn’t tell -
cos I was afraid -
I felt so bad -
it made no sense –
things were so wrong -
I didn’t fit in -
so I had a moment –
and I told my dad -
he said - sit up straight -
you’re better that way -
you’re better this way -
much better that way –
So times went by -
but life wasn’t good
cos I couldn’t change -
how I felt this way -
then I took a knife -
thought about death -
but thought about love -
and how I was made -
I was afraid -
I was so frayed -
And the people – they talk
and talk and always win –
oh the people -
they talk and talk and talk -
about the sin -
and when they listen -
I shut the _ up
I don’t give in -
So times went by-
I met this girl -
was late one night -
she had lots of curls -
told me her life –
then I could see -
she was so smart -
she was so free -
She took my hand –
I stood in the light -
I shone in her light -
and then I could see -
that this was a world -
and it is so good -
but more than one world -
where we could be free -
and I didn’t fall -
and I didn’t falter -
cos she took my hand -
now I was hers -
I could be anything -
oh she set me free –
cos once I was blinded -
and now I can see -
And the people – they talk
and talk and always win –
oh the people -
they talk and talk and jeer -
about the sin -
and when they listen -
we shut the _ up
we don’t give in –
some years have passed -
I’m a bit older -
I’m still inclined -
to look o’er my shoulder -
but I don’t mind -
I’m better this way -
I found instant karma -
despite what they say -
And the people – they talk
and talk and always win –
oh the people -
they talk and talk and rant -
about the sin -
and when they listen -
I shut the _ up
I give them a grin -
So I’m writing songs –
about all my loves -
my rights and wrongs -
to the skies above –
yes I have days -
'n my heart it yearns -
for some company -
for some loving friends -
I met this girl
across the miles -
a friend of my friend -
Oh she has a smile -
I really like her –
she’s a way with words -
we’re on the same page -
at swim - two birds -
So she is a girl -
and I am a girl –
and we fell in love -
she Fehl for me -
Now we are our soulmates -
and love is renewed -
she is my soldier -
she is my truth -
I know my story -
is hard to tell -
cos of how people
can crush and fell -
dad - I don’t despise you -
let there be no hate -
cos I always loved you -
it’s how I am made -
Now I am happy -
because I belong here -
I have found karma –
now I am stronger -
I have my Angels –
and Angels are real -
we love each other -
cos love is the deal –
Love is the difference –
tween lies and d’truth
the sun and the rain -
the man on the moon -
a two-legged table -
a white picket fence -
a sh_ load of rubbish
that never made sense -
And the people – they talk
and talk and sometimes win –
oh the people -
they talk and clown and laugh -
about the sin -
and when they listen –
I refuse to judge them -
I just turn away -
it’s better that way -
Dedicated to Fehl Dungo and Cassy, the two amazing women who changed my life for the better. Also this poem is inspired by the amazing Somali writer Diriye Osman and actor / poet Michael Madsen.
