Instant Karma - Now I Can See - Poem By Cathy Nerujen

Updated on June 30, 2017

About this poem:

Instant Karma ought to be a dark poem, but in essence it becomes a poem about how good things eventually balance out the not-so-good things in life. My own relationship with my father was up and down, "back in the day". I never knew of, or felt or even believed in karma until I met two amazing people who have become such a big part of my life, and made me a better person. They made me open my eyes to the bigger picture. All the other things I was not seeing. This is biographical. This is about things changing for the better, and these two special ladies. This is a poem about karma.

Instant Karma - Now I Can See

Once was a time –
back in the day -
when I couldn’t see –
that I was “that” way -
that was the time –
when I couldn’t talk –
and I wouldn’t tell -
cos I was afraid -

I felt so bad -
it made no sense –
things were so wrong -
I didn’t fit in -
so I had a moment –
and I told my dad -
he said - sit up straight -
you’re better that way -

Cathy Nerujen Poetry
Cathy Nerujen Poetry

you’re better this way -
much better that way –

So times went by -
but life wasn’t good
cos I couldn’t change -
how I felt this way -
then I took a knife -
thought about death -
but thought about love -
and how I was made -

I was afraid -
I was so frayed -

And the people – they talk
and talk and always win –
oh the people -
they talk and talk and talk -
about the sin -
and when they listen -
I shut the _ up
I don’t give in -

So times went by-
I met this girl -
was late one night -
she had lots of curls -
told me her life –
then I could see -
she was so smart -
she was so free -

She took my hand –
I stood in the light -
I shone in her light -
and then I could see -
that this was a world -
and it is so good -
but more than one world -
where we could be free -

Instant Karma - Now I can see

and I didn’t fall -
and I didn’t falter -
cos she took my hand -
now I was hers -
I could be anything -
oh she set me free –
cos once I was blinded -
and now I can see -

And the people – they talk
and talk and always win –
oh the people -
they talk and talk and jeer -
about the sin -
and when they listen -
we shut the _ up
we don’t give in –

Instant Karma - Now I can see

some years have passed -
I’m a bit older -
I’m still inclined -
to look o’er my shoulder -
but I don’t mind -
I’m better this way -
I found instant karma -
despite what they say -

And the people – they talk
and talk and always win –
oh the people -
they talk and talk and rant -
about the sin -
and when they listen -
I shut the _ up
I give them a grin -

Instant Karma - Now I can see

So I’m writing songs –
about all my loves -
my rights and wrongs -
to the skies above –
yes I have days -
'n my heart it yearns -
for some company -
for some loving friends -

I met this girl
across the miles -
a friend of my friend -
Oh she has a smile -
I really like her –
she’s a way with words -
we’re on the same page -
at swim - two birds -

So she is a girl -
and I am a girl –
and we fell in love -
she Fehl for me -
Now we are our soulmates -
and love is renewed -
she is my soldier -
she is my truth -

I know my story -
is hard to tell -
cos of how people
can crush and fell -
dad - I don’t despise you -
let there be no hate -
cos I always loved you -
it’s how I am made -

Instant Karma
Instant Karma | Source

Now I am happy -
because I belong here -
I have found karma –
now I am stronger -
I have my Angels –
and Angels are real -
we love each other -
cos love is the deal –

Love is the difference –
tween lies and d’truth
the sun and the rain -
the man on the moon -
a two-legged table -
a white picket fence -
a sh_ load of rubbish
that never made sense -

And the people – they talk
and talk and sometimes win –
oh the people -
they talk and clown and laugh -
about the sin -
and when they listen –
I refuse to judge them -
I just turn away -
it’s better that way -

Dedicated to Fehl Dungo and Cassy, the two amazing women who changed my life for the better. Also this poem is inspired by the amazing Somali writer Diriye Osman and actor / poet Michael Madsen.

I remember reading this 6 years ago and I still feel the same, so happy you found happiness. Karma still returns and bites the butt of those who laugh at love. Judgement belongs to God. Cheers my friend.

Hi Gypsy Rose Lee, I agree, love is a force that we can't live without in our lives. It does make it all complete. I love what you say about friendships, you understand this so much. Thank you for your insights into the human heart and I like them so much. :)

Nikki, thank you. *Hugs you* You are just awesome. :)

Hi CrisSp, true love can't be silenced. I love that comment. I can't hide my feelings for her because she feels the same way about me. She is beautiful. I think our love will always have a voice because we are both poets and writers. I feel so blessed having Fehl in my life. Oh I am okay with sharing this.

Thank you for the kind comments and the love. Best wishes to you, CrsiSp. :)

Hi Valleypoet, oh things are so much better. My Dad was acting out of a sense of fear and a lack of understanding, and other things. He is from India, and to have a daughter like me would be not so good for a family, due to how some things are not accepted, culturally. My Dad is proud and traditional. But I don't hate. I think not hating made the repairing of things between us happen more quickly perhaps. And I had huge support from Cassy and from Fehl.

It took time but we all learned from it, we grow more and we are family. Thank you for the comments, I am happy to share my story. Maybe it will make a difference somewhere...

Hi Colin, um... compared to Shakespeare, it probably isn't quite in his arena.... LOL. But is is very real and I think some people already know our story from having read other hubs, such as Cheeky Girl's hubs and Fehl's hubs. Yes it is our love story. And Fehl is amazing and beautiful, and I love her so much. :)

Thank you for the kind words as always, Colin. I'm glad I posted this hub, it was a long time coming. There is so much to say and then there has to be some way of saying it without um... every single little or big detail in it. LOL. But just enough ... Maybe we all have stories and we need them to be shared or told. That's what is great about Hub Pages, that we can share the stories or poems or writing here.

This is your favorite, really? Well, I do have more, so don't worry. Heh. As for the courage, I think Cassy had a lot to do with my finding courage when I met her, and Fehl too. Brave... h'mm, interesting word...defiant... wow, I find that a scary thing... Discovering things about yourself can be hard, Colin. Facing truths is hardest if one must face them alone. But because of Fehl and Cassy and other friends, I'm not alone. :)

Aw, you are so sweet. That coffee and snack would be lovely. Heh. Awesome. John Lennon was a genius, and I love his music. I would have loved to have known him. he said all you need is love. He was totally right.

Colin, we are blessed to have you here too. Your being here makes a difference and you always create amazing hubs and poetry for us to enjoy and read. Bless you Mr Epi. You gets hugs for such sweet comments here. :)

My Sweetie and I wish you happiness and good energy too at Lake Erie and may your coffee cup be always more than half-full, otherwise make a new brew.... LOL. :P

      Hi braydonmoore,

...the name reminds me of someone else on Hub Pages named Moore. A wonderful poet, in fact. :)

Thank you for these words. Words from the heart are the most heart felt. I have a few more poems and they are about love. Love is everything.

      Hi Nikki :)

Thank you, honey. Oh, I always stay true to myself, my family and friends. They all somehow make me who I am now. I admit sometimes I do mind what others say, as it's hard not to mind, Nikki. I can't switch off my heart. But you make sense and I understand it.

My relationships all my life have been central to everything... with family, with friends, girls, and mostly with myself. Sorry the guys don't get the credit and attention they perhaps deserve. There are wonderful and nice people in the world.

Nikki I will always be open and true and put my feelings out in the world. In my poems, and in the hubs and anywhere where you find my words will carry. You are a good friend to me always ... and I know you don't judge. Mwaaaaaaaaaah :) You are a diamond, and I love you. You deserve good things in your life. XOXO

      Hi acaetnna,

my Instant Karma is certainly getting an audience here. Heh. :P

Maybe I should bottle it and offer it to everyone? LOL. Oh don't mind me. Yes, I am happy to share my story with everyone on Hub Pages. this is me. There's other bits of me in my other hubs and poetry, and in some of Fehl's hubs and poems, and yes in Cassy's hubs.

I honestly think writers and poets should talk more about who they are in their hubs. Opening that door into our lives shows how human we are ... and our story, our life. I would certainly love to know more about the lives of some great people here in Hubs, such as yourself. It's just an idea. I started a new blog, so I am adding more of myself in that every day, and so far it is amazing. Your hubs are always so full of inspiring love and warmth. It's where I go to warm my mittens and toes. :P

Bless you and thank you for your kind words. Hugs from me. :)

      Hi Ruby,

what a beautiful way of describing my hub poem. I feel it is like that - now that you say it that way, yes. I owe so much to Cassy and to Fehl, for both their love and understanding. I am thankful for many things, including having a wonderful family. My dad and I went through a rough patch, but now we are closer, and things are amazing in the Nerujen house. LOL.

I feel the karma in my life comes from some of my beliefs. I have Buddhist Mum and Indian Father, and a British upbringing... and I have amazing friends who stand by me. I have people who love me and don't give up on me, and they carry me and support me. I count my blessings every day. And I offer my blessings on each and all who support and nurture me in my endeavors.

Thank you Ruby. You are very kind and a good friend always. :)

Hi Dim, it is nice to always see you in my Hub comments. You and Vincent are amazing wonderful poets. There are such people like you who care about words and how they make a picture or tell a story and move us. I am glad I shared my story with you. It's part of me and it's simply who I am.

Wow, I am so glad you are publishing another book. Let me know and I will gladly add it for you in my hubs. I love helping great poets.

Gosh, thank you for these wonderful comments. You are so sweet. Thank you Dim. :)

      Hi Billy,

Oh don't mind the follow thing. Just put it down to um... gremlins in the system, perhaps. LOL. Thank you for reading this poem Instant Karma. It's something I have been meaning to write for a while now. I am blessed to have people read my work on Hub Pages. I am looking forward to these poems being part of the new book coming soon. Thank you sir. :)

      Hi Laurinzo,

Love without the judgement, I see it as love... I can't see it as anything less than love... not when I think of the beautiful people in my life. If I judged them, then it would be tissues of lies... I would hate myself for ever doing that. I try so hard not to hate...

I'm glad you read my Instant karma, Laurinzo. Feel free to check out my other love poems. Thank you for this. :)

Hi Vincent, gosh what a comment hear from you... I am very moved . Thank you. You are right, love somehow sees through the barriers... although I don't think love even always sees them, ... it has a logic all of its own, sometimes. I just always go by my feelings and my heart. I'm happy for your son, because he has an awesome Dad, and if I were him, this is what I'd tell him, tell you. You get big hugs for that.

The looking over my shoulder ... yes, sometimes I catch myself on when I do that. LOL. The last 3 years of my life have been so amazing... thanks to Cassy, and especially to Fehl. They are both so special and understanding. They are mostly why I wrote this poem / song. (It is a tune in my head after all.) And yes, Fehl is my soulmate, and yes... anyone reading my love poems from recent times will notice it. Some good advice here from you, Vincent. Mmmhhh....

As for advertising your books, Vincent I am always happy to help a wonderful poet such as you. Thank you for the tweets and shares. Bless you. You get hugs for that. :)

Hi Cassy Curly Woman..... hehehe.... :P

Can I just hug and kiss you through the computer? LOL. That is so like you to say that. I don't ever want to be that kind of person that you are describing. Others may find pain, and everyone has things in their life that cause some pain. Sometimes it can be too much. I ask Buddha or God to help me find the right path... and I search my heart for my truth. You know me now.

Um... rocking at life, I need to get back to you on that, Cassy.... hehehe. :P

Thank you for these beautiful sentiments. You are always encouraging me to be more. Bless you Miss Curly :P

Out of the darkness into the light. How very beautiful!! Your story is one of many who stands proud and tall above the fray of the unenlightened in our world. Karma is the friend who bestows love and possibly rebukes those who harm with unkind remarks. Love is the master key that unlocks the inner being to understanding and acceptance.. Love and Peace..

      Holy Triple Mother of Everything....

Cathy - this is just incredible. I knew you had a new hub. I didn't know it was like this! I am speechless. And a bit lost for words too!

What you put here has me feeling kind of warm and fuzzy inside...

Some people let a thing eat them up inside. Some folks take in all the hurt or whatever and out comes angst and hate and thunder and all kinds of crap... dark heavy negative stuff

Putting that in words might be the last refuge for some people and if they are writers, that can be incredible if they are talented. Or it can be a disaster... if they can't write anything except angry stuff that shouts at the world!

      Then there is you...

You take that pain and turn it into.... well, you make a hell of a great job turning it into something beautiful. And that says really everything about you....

Though there is a lot of beautiful things I could say about you....

You just rock at life, Cathy! You have that thing, babe! I am so prpoud of you. We all are!

Astra my sweet and talented poet, love is love no matter the choice of partners, my oldest son may have felt the same growing up at home, he came out at 17 and is now 25 I love him and standby him always,, I have a deep respect for love, some of my best friends are gay and as artists we never point fingers, we LOVE each other regardless of what others may be thinking.

You my poet share without any form of shame and so you should, stop looking over your shoulder, you are a free spirit and a lover of life, enjoy who you are, feel every moment, love until it hurts and you and Fehl are soulmates indeed, I sensed that from the many, many poems you both share of one another.

I am pleased to be a friend and fellow poet, thank you for placing my two boooks in your hub, I am humbly very thankful. So my dear, this work is beautiful as is all your poems and I will most definitely be tweeting and sharing it amongst our fellow readers and followers. Hugs

      Hi Frankie,

Um... it is sort of chronological... but that is hard when putting it in poetry.... :P

It is not so much defeated as confused and phased by things... wondering "why me" ... and that. But yes, life had amazing things in store for me... and there are more amazing things to yet come in my life, Frankie.

I owe so much to Fehl for all her love and affection and more.... she is so supportive and loving... and to Cassy. There are others too, some of them on Hub pages and around the web. There are good people in the world, Frankie. :)

She is my Angel. Both she and Cassy. And I am so lucky to have such understanding amazing ladies in my life :)

      I am a lucky woman. :)

Thank you Frankie and Fehl for this. It means a lot to me :)

Goosebumps as I read the last two stanzas! I love it. How they each evolved as you did over the years. It's hard to feel so defeated and rebuild, rebuild, rebuild.. but you have. Look what love had in store for you!

Both of you are angels standing sophisticated as poise shields you from world of shameful voice.

Great writing - I am still stewing in it's echo.
