NEW YEARS DAY I SEE THE SWAN

I see the swan~
On the lake~
Just beyond the ice edge~
Nestled still and soft.
The snow fresh~
Sprinkled white~
Dapples the shore~
Less as it reaches the~
Feathery fir trees height.
A reflection bright~
Clear as glass~
Stops by the frosted edge~
Of colder solid dampened ice~
Light and shear with no life.
The snow continues to fall~
As my footsteps ruffle~
Scattering fluffy white powder.
I peer to see closer the swan~
Pondering what he does~
Wondering what I will do?
I turn in the cold~
With the hint of the sun~
Slipping now down~
Engulfed by darkened~
Tree tops.
A chill drives me back~
To the warmth~
As the landscape~
Peaceful is beauty rich.
I see the swan~
On the lake~
Just beyond the ice edge~
Nestled still and soft.
