Our Words

Updated on April 17, 2010

Have you ever thought about how many words you speak in a day? Words, next to love, makes the world go round. Without words where would we be? There would be almost no communication, limited at best. No dictionaries, no need for computers, tv or radio. Wow imagine a world without those. It would most definitely be a quieter world.

But we do have words, thanks goodness, because I do love to write and talk. Our words hold a lot of power. They can lift someone up or tear them down. They can save a life or cause the end of life. Words are amazing. It's funny how we can get a hundred compliments yet one insult and all those compliments are shot down, that insult is what we will remember. Why do we do that to ourselves? Words! They are very powerful.

I am sure you have heard the old saying, ' sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me,' Rubbish!! Words can hurt deeply and terribly and we all know it. One word can cut deep or make a smile. One simple word, a few tiny letters. It's hard to believe that something we cannot even hold in our hand can carry so much weight.

Words can be eloquent or dirty, happy or sad, comforting or insulting, confusing and many times misinterpreted. Sometimes we try to say what we are feeling and someone else hears it differently than we mean it. You know that game where you sit twelve or so people down and one starts a whisper and passes it down til it gets to the end and when the sentence that started twelve people ago comes out of the twelfth persons mouth, it is always different that when it begins. Why? Because words get misconstrued and blown out of proportion. A little added here and little left out there and you have a whole new sentence. Words! We cannot live without them.

There are people of few words and people of many words. Sometimes the ones that say the least actually say the most. I have seen a woman say one word and a room of two hundred immediately quiet. Then I have seen two people arguing and shouting at each other and neither hear a word the other says. Amazing! Some people speak before they think about what they say. One can say just a few words that can affect a life or lives forever. Some run their mouths and do not care who they hurt in the process.

We must be careful with our words. They can be the glue that holds things together or the solvent that tears things apart. I try to be very careful with my words, as I do not want to hurt anyone. There is a thin line when it comes to speaking. We must be diplomatic in some situations. How you chose your words and how you speak them can cause calm or a riot. We should think on the things that we use our words for, to help, to heal, to make someone smile, to make someones day or just look in the mirror and say something nice to ourselves. By doing that it may make it easier when talking to someone when we know how we would like to be spoke to.

So, in this Hub I have used 566 words so far, thats a lot of words, let alone letters, in one small space. I hope this will make someone stop and think about what they say next time and how thay say it. Take the chance to do some good with their words. My favorite words are, 'I love you!'  And that what makes the world go round. Speak well, make your words a breath of fresh air. We all need to hear something nice everyday.

A beautiful piece, my dear! Another thing similar to compliments/insults is that when someone or something pleases us, we tell ten people about it. When something or someone displeases us, we tell a hundred! :D
