Is There Such a Thing As True Love? Does True Love Exist? - a Poem

Updated on July 29, 2015

April is National Poetry Month

Here's an older poem I'm recycling for National Poetry Month. Write some poetry! Read some poetry! Enjoy poetry! #7

When is Love Real?

This is yet another “A.M. Poem” from my wee-hour scribblings, this time about the expression of love and what is really real. See below for more A.M. poems.

Young Couple in Love?
Young Couple in Love? | Source

I Love You...Really?

On the sappy movie—

Some damn chick flick—

A Greek god tells

A leggy blonde

That he loves her,

Almost carelessly,

So easily,

As if the words were easy

And had always been there.

She doesn’t seem surprised,

Flicks her long hair back,

Smiles easily,

With perfect teeth,

Repeating the same thing

To him now,

Perhaps automatically,

So simply,

As if there was never a question.

Were there any nerves involved?

Hesitation? Or doubt?

Seemed to be none…

None of the normal stuff,

No fear of rejection…

But assurance,

A confident smile,

A sure gaze,

Along with a smug, “I love you.”

My eyes harden

Towards the embracing couple.

I want to slap

That stupid blonde,

That bronzed dark god,

Because she is so calm...

And that can’t be

What it feels like

To hear those three words.

Flow of beautiful images easily comes in your poetry.

I think I understand your “A.M. Poem” because even my "creativity" flows after the midnight.

BakerRambles--Thanks for the awesome comments. Glad you liked it. I liked your being specific about the poem; it helps me to know what readers identify with. Binaya--good to see you again! Ah, like minds! I don't stay up as late as I used to when I wrote the "A.M. Poems," but I think I need to get back to that and let it flow!!

Victoria, yes! This always bugs me too! Glad to see I'm not the only one. Hearing those three words always raised as many questions as hopes, at least for me. Maybe my life has jaded my perspective but I suspect not. Wonderful job of expressing healthy skepticism. Voted up and awesome.

I use to keep pen and paper besides my bed just in case an inspiration finds it's way out of unconscious sleep but I discontinue the practice for the reason in the poem .....

      She comes

      my secret muse,

      a 4 A.M. tryst

      half asleep

      on auto mode

      the pen writes

      of love's odyssey

      from covert night

      a masterpiece,

      at dawn's light

      turns illegible

      scribble,scribble

      indecipherable :)

SilentReed--you just wrote a wonderful hub! Very clever! Have you published this poem here? If not, you should. It's lovely!

      Wonderful comments, friends:

Poetic Fool--"healthy skepticism"--perfect description. Glad to see there are like minds out there.

Movie Master--thanks for all the adjectives to describe it!

Epi--"sentiment, charms, and wit"--what else could a girl ask for? Thanks, all!

I'm glad you like it! I'm an incurble cynic as well. Sometimes I think it's the reality of life that drives us to be that way, though. Glad I could validate a fellow cynic! Thanks so much for your comments.

Victoria...I'm with you...how shallow and unfeeling...this is how I imagine those words are being spoken by the couple you've described. For me, it's full of emotion, wondering, questioning and nervousness...because when one says "I love you," they are opening themselves up and baring themselves to another who can "make or break" the moment. The empty and vapid ways in which "love' is being portrayed on so many levels' and by only the "perfect" people leaves me cold and removed...because, as far as I am concerned; such images don't represent love, at all. Yikes! Now, I've done it!!!! UP Awesome and Interesting!

      Victoria,

Greetings from MAKUSR. I can clearly see your rejection of the crass commercialization of love. A person who is genuine feels troubled over this development. Thanks for sharing.

      Lots of Love,

SECRETS OF LOVE By BERNARD LEVINE

Make your love one feel special everyday.

Do not allow your lives to become routine -

prepare lots of different activities to enjoy.

Never take your loved one for granted.

      Keep your love forever precious,

      sacred and beautiful.

What you put into your love

is what you will get out of your love.

      Enrich your lives with prayer.

Always be your partners best friend.

Hi Victoria..oh yes I understand what you are saying...Love is hard work and never perfect...shoot relationships in general...those beautiful people that make us want to gag go home and have the same problems and challenges that we all go through dont they? Maybe worse if you think about it..lol

      Thanks for sharing..

Hearing those three words can be as unnerving as saying them. Love can be full of fear as you wrote and sometimes looks different in the morning, just like SilentReed wrote.

May I add - your photo of perfect smiles, teeth, fitness, attitude and happiness makes me want to gag. Show me the truth - hard work and sweat.

I did love being loved by one who wasn't always perfect and didn't always have perfect timing and perfect words.

      Thanks for sharing
