Poetry about Loss of Loved Ones
How to Deal with the Loss of a Loved One?
One of the things that can help us deal with the loss of a loved one is writing. Writing poetry and/or songs (whether just lyrics or music too) is not only beneficial and helps us heal in many ways but it is also gives us a creative outlet for self-expression.
Losing a loved one doesn't have to be to death. It can be due to a divorce, or to problems in a relationship, or to someone moving away to a different part of the country or to a different country altogether. There could be many other reasons too.
No matter what the reason may be losing someone is never a great experience and it is filled with sorrow and a mix of other emotions. It can have a negative effect on your life and stop you from moving forward. Writing down all the feelings and emotions that settle upon you and leave their scars can help you cope with the loss, especially when it is done through such creative outlets as poetry or songs.
I have lost both of my grandmothers, my maternal grandfather, my uncle, my uncle's dad, and other relatives to death. I have lost friends, who were special to me, who I thought would be in my life forever for reasons I can't explain. I have lost guys who I fell in love with, loved and connected with and hoped would be part of my future for reasons I can't explain either. I have faced loss many times (not just to death) and have turned to writing to help me deal with all of the emotional and psychological dilemmas that followed after those people's departure from my life.
I have to say that writing poetry and lyrics made dealing with the loss of a loved one easier. It even saved my life on more than one occasion.
Below are some of the grief and loss poems and songs that I have written that have helped me through those extremely tough times...
Poem - More Than My Heart Can Take
I’ve long forgotten the tears
That spilled from my eyes like raging rivers
Whenever I thought of days without you
Or reminisced about the days we’d shared
I’ve long moved on from everything you meant to me
From what we were and what we’d been through
When you were present in my life
But now that I find you with another
Now that I find you on one bended knee
Asking her to share your future
And her saying yes with overflowing happiness
As she kisses you with a sweet passion
The tears spill once more like raging rivers
And everything comes flooding back to me like a tsunami
I wish for her to be washed away with the tide
For you to be left standing on one bended knee
Proposing to thin air
Because having her there
Is more than my heart can take
Poem - The Pain of Yesterday
The soothing rain cascades down my body
Washing away the pain of yesterday
Is still fresh and the tears bitter
Yet I feel a peaceful relief of your absence
For your last days on this earth
Were filled with agonizing torture
That never ceased its cruel game
You are now a free roaming soul
That you had wished for in your final days
Leaving both you and me in peace
Song (Lyric) - Memories Reach for the Sky
A faded picture
A stained glass
The memories
Of days that passed
Without you here
Hard to move on
But I will try
To get things done
‘Cause I know that you’d want me to fly
Spread my wings and reach for the sky
So my dreams soar above and my life
Is the best it can be this time
A withered rose
A smoked cigar
I think of you
Of where you are
Without you here
Hard to move on
But I know I
Can get things done
‘Cause I know that you’d want me to fly
Spread my wings and reach for the sky
So my dreams soar above and my life
Is the best it can be this time
You’re better there
Than you were here
Want you to know
You’re always near
Won’t let you go
Won’t let you down
I will stay strong
I’ll win the crown
‘Cause I know that you’d want me to fly
Spread my wings and reach for the sky
So my dreams soar above and my life
Is the best it can be this time
I will spread my wings and I’ll fly
I’ll make sure that I reach for the sky
So my dreams soar above and my life
Is the best it can be this time
Song (Lyric) - With Every Passing Moment
I kiss the rain
I taste the tear
I wonder if
You’re really here
You’re out of reach
You’re out of touch
With every breath
Miss you so much
And so with every passing moment
I wonder if you’re gone
I wonder if you vanished from me
Never to return
I cannot live without you
You’re the missing piece in me
I need you in my life forever
You have set me free
I touch the window
And stare far
Into the distance
Where you are
Reach out my hand
Find empty space
I’m trapped alone
Inside this place
And so with every passing moment
I wonder if you’re gone
I wonder if you vanished from me
Never to return
I cannot live without you
You’re the missing piece in me
I need you in my life forever
You have set me free
Do you think of me as I think of you
Do you crave for me as I crave for you
Do you love me as much as I love you now
Do you wish I was right beside you now
In this passing moment
Do you wish we owned it
Just you and me
Just you and me
For all eternity
And so with every passing moment
I wonder if you’re gone
I wonder if you vanished from me
Never to return
I cannot live without you
You’re the missing piece in me
I need you in my life forever
You have set me free
Are you gone for good
Or are you here
How long will it be
‘Til you reappear
