Reading-The Ever Interesting Pastime

Updated on September 15, 2012

Reading relaxes your mind

Nothing - absolutely nothing can compare to the sheer ecstasy of reading. You'd attended a late party last night, pulled yourself up to get ready to go to work in the morning and after a long haul at the office, you get back home like a dead log. But work is awaiting you at home too. You had better finish up the left over dishes and cook something for yourself while simultaneously doing up the laundry. Oh hell! What a day it has been!

The quickest and easiest way to gather yourself before you complete the chores is to grab a book (not any book-but a pleasant read) and relax on the sofa. Within a few minutes you would have sort of recovered from the sluggish mood and will be able to just complete the work and call it a day!

When your body is too tired to walk or talk, you cannot possibly think of some physical exercises to refresh it, as it will make matters worse. On the contrary, a reclined posture on the couch with a nice book in hand will pull you out of the restlessness and give you new vigor and balance. If you don't believe me, try it when you are in such a bad situation. You'll then be able to understand my point better.

In fact reading is also a kind of meditation because you want to steer your mind clear of unwanted thoughts. By focusing your mind on good things like browsing through a useful book, your mind is diverted from its typical path of thinking leading to relaxation.

Is reading a good pastime?

Reading has always been an ever interesting pastime and will always be. It is said that the invention of computers and gaming stations has been responsible for a decline in book reading, but it is not actually so. The technological advancement has only helped to increase the knowledge about books due to the online campaigns. Purchase of books has never been easier with more and more people buying them online.

Reading as a habit

I remember beginning to read books in bold and colorful print at the age of six, when I was in my first grade. It is a common practice to encourage children to start reading by about this age. Of course, picture books are introduced as early as the children's third year or so, when they like to look at colorful fruits and vegetables, birds and animals and so on. I don't have to explain the wonderful times we have had listening to bedtime stories read out to us by our parents or grandparents.

This reading later on develops as a habit which is very good and healthy and facilitates a disciplined life. Newspaper reading is considered the most prominent example of the reading habit. A lot of knowledge about the world around us is gained by reading newspapers. Novels, short and long, provide you with entertainment while making you understand the creativity and the different perspectives of a varied group of writers.

Purpose of books

Books are the outcome of a writer's unique creative capacity. Anyone and everyone cannot write a book. To become a big success and a bestseller, a book has to be created in such a way that it attracts a huge readership. There is something beyond talent and intelligence of a writer that contributes to the success of a book.

Writers, both fiction and non-fiction, gain eminence by their imagination and the skill to narrate their ideas in an interesting and lucid manner. They make their books interesting to read and gain fame in no time. We have several best sellers on the market today and each book is famous in its own way. Theme of the book, presentation and character portrayal are the major determinants of success.

Books may be of various kinds- serious fiction, humor, non-fiction, science-fiction, thrillers, horror stories and the like. It is up to you to choose the book that interests you most and read it.

The present day technological advancements have made it very easy for you to get books of your choice at the click of a button. Online purchase of books is very simple these days, so you don't have to go out to a bookstore if you want a particular book, but order it online from the comfort of your own home.

With such facilities at our disposal, people should take to reading more and more and widen their knowledge in all spheres of life. The book review here will give you more information about an excellent book that has created waves in recent times.
