Reading-The Ever Interesting Pastime

Updated on September 15, 2012

Reading relaxes your mind

Nothing - absolutely nothing can compare to the sheer ecstasy of reading. You'd attended a late party last night, pulled yourself up to get ready to go to work in the morning and after a long haul at the office, you get back home like a dead log. But work is awaiting you at home too. You had better finish up the left over dishes and cook something for yourself while simultaneously doing up the laundry. Oh hell! What a day it has been!

The quickest and easiest way to gather yourself before you complete the chores is to grab a book (not any book-but a pleasant read) and relax on the sofa. Within a few minutes you would have sort of recovered from the sluggish mood and will be able to just complete the work and call it a day!

When your body is too tired to walk or talk, you cannot possibly think of some physical exercises to refresh it, as it will make matters worse. On the contrary, a reclined posture on the couch with a nice book in hand will pull you out of the restlessness and give you new vigor and balance. If you don't believe me, try it when you are in such a bad situation. You'll then be able to understand my point better.

In fact reading is also a kind of meditation because you want to steer your mind clear of unwanted thoughts. By focusing your mind on good things like browsing through a useful book, your mind is diverted from its typical path of thinking leading to relaxation.

Is reading a good pastime?

Reading has always been an ever interesting pastime and will always be. It is said that the invention of computers and gaming stations has been responsible for a decline in book reading, but it is not actually so. The technological advancement has only helped to increase the knowledge about books due to the online campaigns. Purchase of books has never been easier with more and more people buying them online.

Reading as a habit

I remember beginning to read books in bold and colorful print at the age of six, when I was in my first grade. It is a common practice to encourage children to start reading by about this age. Of course, picture books are introduced as early as the children's third year or so, when they like to look at colorful fruits and vegetables, birds and animals and so on. I don't have to explain the wonderful times we have had listening to bedtime stories read out to us by our parents or grandparents.

This reading later on develops as a habit which is very good and healthy and facilitates a disciplined life. Newspaper reading is considered the most prominent example of the reading habit. A lot of knowledge about the world around us is gained by reading newspapers. Novels, short and long, provide you with entertainment while making you understand the creativity and the different perspectives of a varied group of writers.

Purpose of books

Books are the outcome of a writer's unique creative capacity. Anyone and everyone cannot write a book. To become a big success and a bestseller, a book has to be created in such a way that it attracts a huge readership. There is something beyond talent and intelligence of a writer that contributes to the success of a book.

Writers, both fiction and non-fiction, gain eminence by their imagination and the skill to narrate their ideas in an interesting and lucid manner. They make their books interesting to read and gain fame in no time. We have several best sellers on the market today and each book is famous in its own way. Theme of the book, presentation and character portrayal are the major determinants of success.

Books may be of various kinds- serious fiction, humor, non-fiction, science-fiction, thrillers, horror stories and the like. It is up to you to choose the book that interests you most and read it.

The present day technological advancements have made it very easy for you to get books of your choice at the click of a button. Online purchase of books is very simple these days, so you don't have to go out to a bookstore if you want a particular book, but order it online from the comfort of your own home.

With such facilities at our disposal, people should take to reading more and more and widen their knowledge in all spheres of life. The book review here will give you more information about an excellent book that has created waves in recent times.

I am a avid reader! I read solely for pleasure, no self help books, or expanding my mind books...only books that let me lose myself for a period of time and relax!

And I need a real book, not a down loadable book for my newest techno reader, not the internet, nothing computerized at all, but a real, honest to goodness, paper and binding book!

There is nothing better than curling up in your favorite chair, with a light blanket and a chilled glass of wine and a good book. It is the best relaxing technique...besides a good massage, that I know.

      Great hub!

I love to read I have loved to read since I can remember picking up a book. I would even read things while going to the bathroom as a kid like the tooth paste or a shampoo bottle. I wish my kids would take up reading like I did as a child.

Books can definitely transcend us to another world for an hour or two. We are completely in our own world, recreating words into imagery. Its wonderful to read. Its my favorite past time as well. I loved the book, the Hero's Walk, it was one of the books that made me a book enthusiast. Movies can never do full justice to the sheer joy of a good book.

On your selection of books, Steve Jobs autobiography was very interesting. Another favorite of mine. Its amazing how we often do not appreciate the difficulties of successful leaders and tech gurus. Many have gone through difficult hardships, some worse than our own, to achieve what their heart desires.

Its beautiful to read and very awe inspiring. I love reading motivational books about people who have gone against all odds and succeeded. I especially like humanitarian books that focus on the human spirit and compassion. Thanks for writing this hub. I love the way you wrote this hub with such enthusiasm. Great hub. Voted up.

I was schooled before the age of computers and mobiles or even TV. So I had just my books as my entertainment source and I guess I must have read books of all genres. And I am thankful for those times that allowed me to appreciate the value of reading.

I cannot agree with you more on the benefits of reading a good book.

Thank you very much for reading my hub and voting it up Rajan. I too went to school before these gadgets came, with TV making its appearance just then. My parents too encouraged the reading habit, so we learned the value of reading then.

But one thing that really fascinates me now is that my children who have been growing up with computers and mobiles are into reading books and I am very happy about that. I too used to complain that my teen age daughter did not read much but at one stage, suddenly she got interested in books and now reads too much lol!

Thanks for the encouraging words Rajan. Cheers, Rema.

Rema, finally after a long Labor Day weekend here I am checking in and catching up a bit and glad I stopped by here. I too love reading and have to admit I have neglected it for the last few months and usually read a book a week. Your article reminded me that I do indeed miss that past-time and need to find a good book to read sooner rather than later. Very much agree with your message here though!! Have voted and shared too!!

Yeah you are right, reading a good book is like a blessing. It is important to develop reading habits in the kids.Usually kids follow their parents. If the parents have the reading habits,i am sure they will also follow them.If the kids develop a reading habit, whole life they will follow this habit. You are right ,because of technological advancement we can access any new book available in the market. We can read them on our computer. But i think technological advancement also created a gap among us.In the past,we used to go to library to read books, magazines etc. This activity helped us in socializing with help.Socializing with people is positive activity as it helps people make new friends, most importantly it helps us preventing from mental diseases. Now everything has become virtual .I still love to go to library to read books

Now, thanks to my daughter-in-law who prodded me to begin again, I have started reading again. I finished one 'The kite runner" by Khaled Hosseini. Now I am reading a second novel by the same author "A thousand splendid suns". Amazing books Ishwaryaa. I suggest you read them too. Emotion-packed novels.

Rema, I agree with you 100%. Reading is such a beautiful pastime, in fact I can't go a day without reading a book. Sometimes it takes me a month to finish one because I only read a couple of pages a day. It allows me to forget where I am and get lost in another world, in another time and taking a trip along with the main character - wherever they may be, or whatever they may be doing. This was a lovely hub, and so original! Thanks for sharing it :)
