Rictameter poetry. The gift

Updated on December 05, 2013

I am a writer of poetry and fiction. I especially love flash fiction. My name is Ruby, and I live in Southern Illinois. I am a retired R.N.

The gold key, symbolic of true love and devotion.

The gift

Two golden keys

Eternal devotion

Exchanged simultaneously

On their wedding day many years ago

Kept safely in jewelry box

Christmas eve renewal

Symbolic switch

The gift.

What a great idea for this poem; romantic, simple and coming full circle. My daughter and son-in-law fixed a padlock to a bridge near to where they were married (in the fashion of lovers' padlocks on bridges along the Seine); the tradition says that the key is thrown into the sea (or river) and the padlock remains unopened, a symbol of undying love.

You've used every word to maximum effect and you've shaped the poem well, literally! I love it. Ann

Stay warm my friend; winter has definitely arrived.

Beautiful and very romantic! Reminded me of the bridge in Paris, the Pont des Arts, where lovers began locking padlocks onto a chin link fence. However, I can see Ann is thinking along the same lines.

      Nicely done.

Rictameter poetry really displays the cyclic nature of your poem, good form to choose and well crafted. Jamie

Hello tobusiness, Thank you for coming by my page and leaving a thoughtful comment. I guess the padlocks are an old custom used in other countries. I love the idea.

      Hi Ruby;

I loved the beauty and cleverness of this poem...it is rhythmic yet does not rhyme, and circles back, perfectly. Lovely work. :-) Voted up and shared.
