The Diner at Night
The Diner Image
The Diner at Night
Sitting in the diner late at night
Coffee flows like water as we slurp them back like whiskey shots
Our eyes tired, our minds busy with thoughts fueled by the never ending drinks
We talk and talk, making jokes about days passed and the future to come
We are close to the only souls in the place, the streets outside empty
All the others shops have closed for the night, waiting for dawn to rise and start another day
The lights outside beckon us to come and walk home to enjoy a brief moment of sleep
Yet our conversation seems to never end, and I am in no hurry for it to.
Another coffee, adding to my caffeine fueled nighttime enjoyment, is chugged down
Soon my coffee’s come in shorter bursts, then none at all
Though the Diner is open late, they are not a 24 Diner
You pay like the gentlemen you are and we walk outside to see the sky barely alight with dawn
It is only 3am; hopefully Mr. Johnson does not get angry at us for keeping him open so late
As we leave he has a smile on his face
We must have made his night
We should have more nights filled with deep and humorous conversations
They add to my happiness despite my growing age and weariness
The street lights slowly fade out as you walk me home, your jacket draped about my shoulders
The chill in the air is not bad but still slightly annoying in a sense
Now at my doorstep you bid me farewell and promise that we’ll have another day
I go inside my home ready for bed, yet I cannot sleep…the coffee saw to that.
But at the same time time I can't blame the caffine, because all I can think about is another
wonderful night with you and that little Diner.
