The Forgotten Sister - Chapter 4
Bake me a cake as fast as you can
The Forgotten Sister
Chapter 4
4 May
I don’t suppose that I should be surprised that I dreamed about cakes last night. In Europe people like finding jam between the layers of cakes. In America they seem to prefer frosting or, God forbid, Coolwhip instead. I started experimenting with different jams between cake layers when I worked in my foster family’s bakery. I hit upon a chocolate/black currant combination that proved to be very popular. That was how I met Lars. He bought one of my cakes for his sister’s birthday. The day after the celebration he came back to the bakery and wanted to tell my foster Father how wonderful my cake was. "You can tell her yourself, young man," he said motioning me over to the counter. "Camilla is the inventor of the cake you like so much."
"My name is Lars Johanson. I’m a teacher at the primary school just down the road. It’s the one with the blue roof. You can see it from the front of your shop. I bought one of your wonderful cakes for my sister’s birthday. She loved it. I loved it. Our guests all loved it. You are a very talented inventor of cakes. Would you have dinner with me at 1900 tonight?"
I felt my face grow hot and must have looked red as a fire engine. I didn’t know what to say or do but my lips just took it upon themselves to say, "Yes, I’d be happy to and I’m glad you enjoyed my cake." I had dinner almost every evening after that with Lars. I fell in love with him right that instant. It wasn’t anything I had to think about. It just was and had to be and that’s all there was to it. Lars drew me deeply into his world. Inside a week I was helping him grade papers, planning school outings and decorating his classroom. I made special cookies for his class every Friday and brought them right down to his classroom still dressed in my baker’s outfit and hat. The children loved that. Lars introduced me as his girlfriend Camilla to the class. One little girl asked Lars if he was going to marry me. He looked right at me and said, "If she’ll have me I will." Pandemonium ensued. The children were jumping up and down in delight. Then they got very quiet and all looked at me.
I did my usual red fire engine imitation and stammered, "I would be delighted to marry you Lars Johanson." That was how he proposed and how I accepted. Two weeks later I moved out of my apartment over the bakery and in with Lars. Four months later we married. That summer, during school holidays, we found an old farm house that needed some love and bought it.
Oh, I almost forgot my dream. I dreamed I was baking a cake in the kitchen of our house before we modernized it. It still had an old wood fired range and I was having quite a time trying to get the oven at the right temperature for baking cakes. First I would put too much wood in it and it would get too hot and burn my cake. Then it would be too cool and the cake wouldn’t raise properly. I was getting very frustrated with the whole process. Lizbeth was there with me. We were laughing and cutting up like we did when we were kids. She tried to make the stove work for me but only got a lot of soot on the kitchen floor for her trouble. The funny thing is I never even tried to bake a cake in that old thing and Lizbeth never saw my house. I did all of my baking at work and brought things home. I wonder what this means?
