The Outside Looking In

Brenda Thornlow is an author from the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, New York.

She walks home from school by herself and to all around her she has everything.
She is the adorable little girl next door.
She is the adorable little girl who sits in between her mother and father at church.

The only child of her mother and father who must be so doted upon.
To those around her, she has everything her heart desires….everything she asks for.
To those around her, she wants for nothing, does not have a care in the world.
Nothing to make her unhappy.
To those around her, there is nothing for which to be unhappy.
Why should there be?

Those around don’t see her stomach tighten as she approaches her home.
Every step closer to home...
Those around her don’t see the welts hiding under her little slacks.
Those around her don’t know what awaits her as she walks through the door to what should be shelter from the storm.
Those around her don’t know because she must keep smiling, must stay happy, she has many people to impress, must not let anyone down….
Only herself.

Very profound, your words say so much. Child abuse is tragic - physical and emotional abuse so difficult for the outsider to recognise. You capture this very well. Extremely sad and so true.

Deep and profound. Abuse is an evil that we must wage a war on. Thanks for sharing this.

This tragedy is all too real for too many of our children. Whether physical or emotional, abuse often sets in motion a cycle which is carried forward to the next generation, and the next. Voted up.

So so sad Bk. Abuse is so prevalent that it is often un-noticed. Outside appearances can be deceiving. Voted up.

Horrible, but a reality. You did very impressive painting of the situation. Good work!

Sad reality here, I am afraid far too often than not. When it comes to children being harmed whether, physically, emotionally or verbally, I just cannot stand the thought and must say something.

Fear of being judged plus the average child tends to believe they're the only ones going through this and that brought it on themselves.

      Thanks for reading, James!

Abuse is an epidemic in this country, one of the unspoken horrors. More must be done to end this ...and raising awareness with poems like this one is very important.
