The Politicians | A Poem of Social Commentary

Updated on June 13, 2015

The Politicians

Stone cold hearts

they wear on their sleeves,

Proudly polished with the snake oil of hypocrisy,

Thinly veiled

in a cascade of lies.

Their only care to

deceive, corrupt,

and claim

All the goods, the riches,

the power--for themselves.

Long forgotten or ignored

are the hard-won battles

Our forefathers fought

just such as these.

I love the last stanza. So sad....I am so fed up with politics right now. This is the worst I can remember seeing. I just don't feel as though most politicians are working for the people.

So true, Liz. It's a crying shame, too.

@ billybuc - Agreed; most politicians these days are but paid shills for the mega-corporations and their over-paid executives. I have a t-shirt that reads "Proud to be an American." I refuse to wear it in public anymore--it has been banished for use as pajamas only. And that makes me both sad and angry.

@ bravewarrior - Yes, indeed, it is. If only we could get the majority of Americans to WAKE UP, and vote these greedy, immoral, obstructive clowns out of office, perhaps we could get our country back.

I can remember, Liz, a long, long time ago, when serving in politics appeared to be an honorable profession, but in today's world it seems to be a fast track to personal aggrandizement at the expense of the people.

With so few words, you said it, m'dear, so well!

    Hi there, drbj!

Yes indeed! Nowadays, it seems that being selfish, greedy, bigoted, and a pathological liar are all pre-requisites for public office! Grrrr

Thanks so very much for your nice comment; glad you liked my poetic rant. ;)

Well, I have never followed politics so I did not understand that at all. I still pinned it though.

LOL, Kevin--your wit is showing. Thanks for the pin!

MsLizzy, you are so spot on, but we must keep on voting for the ones that are the least rotten and throw out the worst of the worst as best we can. I have heard an old saying: "You can't be a doormat, unless you lie down and let THEM walk on you." So...unless we put our foot down, they will put theirs down on me and you.

    Voted up, UAI and shared.

    Blessings MSLizzy

    Hi Shyron!

You are so correct! Yet I fear for the future of our country, when so many people have become SO digusted and discouraged that they no longer vote at all. That is a surefire recipe for disaster. Nothing gives the power freaks control faster than voter apathy.

Thanks so very much for your insightful comment, votes and share!

And oh so very true Lizzy! its the same over here, blah blah can you vote for me because I will tell the truth, etc then they get in and totally do the opposite! you hit the nail on the head! nice one, nell

    Hi, Nell!

Yes, I do believe most, if not all, politicians are cut from the same cloth. (I intended to be clever, there, and not use that old cliche, but my brain failed me. LOL)

Glad you liked this bit of verse! Thanks very much.

Not just in America! I'm fed up with our politicians who keep promising the earth and delivering not even a grain of sand. Shame there is none with integrity, at least none that continues past the first post.

I hope enough people make a stand against these corrupt figures and manage to change the approach, but I fear my hope is in vain.

    Great poem, Lizzy.

So sadly true, Ann--I wish there were some way to inject some basic human compassion into these yay-hoos!

I'm most pleased you so liked the poem. Thank you.
