The Bad Word (limerick)

Updated on May 26, 2013

I accused wife of saying bad word

To which she remarked that’s absurd

I looked her in eye

And said with a sigh

That word budget* I clearly heard

*Okay, for all you literal folks, we both used bad word.

The only thing that came to mind when I started wtih the first couple of lines is visitng a store and getting kicked out because the store clerk thought I'd cussed when I whispered something under my breath to my husband! It wasn't anything close to a cuss word, though I could see how it would sound like one to eavesdropping ears that heard a rhyme. But, I was incredulous that I'd been accused of cussing by someone that had no business listening to the conversation anyway.

'Budget' is not such a bad word, Martin,

Though it may cover so many ills.

A much worse word that's often heard

Is the word pronounced as 'bills.'

Budget is certainly a necessary word used all too often. Sad, but true.

We say, "budget," in our home without actually saying is always with us, and has become part of our lives. It's a way of life that is second nature. Loved this adorable limerick. :-)
