We are told

Updated on March 10, 2010

We are toldĀ

We are told

that the times we live in

are modern.

We have no restraints,

freedom is there for the taking.

Our birthright.

Our life is ours to choose

our direction.

Religion, custom or tradition

cannot hold us back.

This is the New Millennium, is the call:

we do not live

by the old ways,

they have been washed away

in the sea of the new century.

It is not the truth,

as we find

that there is nothing new.

Come back to the basics

and you see.

We have no free will,

we are tied with strong bindings

to the old ways.

We cannot control anything,

our lives are not our own.

Decisions are made

by a power greater than us.

If it is ordained, then

so will it be.

Very thought-provoking, loved the way you spread the idea of your poetry...

Thank you. I wanted to create my own style of writing poetry.

The poem was inspired by someone who said in modern times things are completely different to earlier times and I wanted to show that nothing has changed.

It certainly appears as you say. How else could I strive so hard for mediocrity and be humbled countlessly. No matter how things change they remain the same. Tanks

Yes, but I don't really think you are mediocre.

Powerful, potent poetry. Of course it is all so true. Thanks for keeping poetry alive. I encourage my students to write poems and once they start they love it - they put so much down on paper!

I've always been a writer and lover of poetry but for years now it has disappeared. Could my life no longer be the poetry it once was? Hmmmm.

Thank you for this comment. When I write a poem it comes from some incident or thought I have. I do not set out to write, they come out of the air almost complete.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

Thank you for a fine piece of poetry. I, for one, enjoyed it thoroughly.

Thank you for reading my poem. It is always good to read comments from others because poems are so personal, it is difficult to know what people will think.

Thank you. I often find this is true, that if something is meant to happen, like a relationship, then it does. It is something you seem to know in your heart.
