You're Someone Like Me - Poem By Cathy Nerujen

I saw you today

and I gave you a smile –

popped in for a chat –

and I stayed for a while –

your eyes were so tired

from a long weary day –

you needed a cuddle –

I asked could I stay.

We laughed and we talked –

then I gazed in your eyes –

I saw so much love –

that’s no real surprise –

this hot lava feeling

that lights up my veins –

sends ripples of love

from my toes to my brain.

You know my true feelings –

you know all my life –

you’ve stayed by my side -

through my troubles and strife –

we’ve kissed and ate muffins –

we drank so much wine –

we made Bacchus jealous –

with our youth and our prime -

we dance in the dark –

we glow in the light –

we snuggle like rug rats –

and winter up tight –

I’ll tend to your tiredness –

I’ll tuck you up warm –

with hot milk and biscuits –

stay with you till dawn –

There are more than just grains of truth about the maternal instincts of the birds in the pictures here. This is a romantic poem about a love that has bloomed between myself and a very special person. She is my soul mate. She is someone who knows me better than anyone else in the world. I can tell her everything, and she tells me the same.

But more than my soul mate, she is someone very like me. She is also a poet and writer, she sees the world and people as I do. She feels about things the same way. She and I have shared many wonderful and beautiful things together. She is so special in so many ways. Special as in, "I want to spend the rest of my life with you" special.

This is my poem for her. Because she is beautiful and because she loves me so much. And that means everything to me.

I’ll stay with you longer –

just give me the word –

we’ll build us a love nest –

for us two love birds –

I’ve found what I’m made for –

in the shade of this tree –

you are my true soul mate –

you’re someone like me.
