I'm always torn. I love Harry Potter (the series) and consider all of them to be along my favorite books. However, when asked, I always want to pick something not so obvious for me, meaning I'd have to go with Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I think the intricate detailing of how the sins of the family follow down through the ages was such a powerful idea for me. I actually don't care for the ending, though and thought it nearly ruined the novel. I also think that a Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin uses some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read.

Harry Potter is an excellent book with great story content. Thanks for answering. If you would follow me on hub pages, and tell other people about my question thanks!

The first book (series) that comes to mind is The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Its really heavy on myth and lore with things like magic, werewolves, vampires, goblins, demons etc. The main thing that got me though is the the protagonist, hes pretty much the most sarcastic underdog on the planet and its hilarious.

Great Expectations - Charles Dickens. So many messages are present in this literary classic.  #1. Sometimes in life the people that help you aren't the people you might think would provide you with assistance.   #2. Miss Havisham represented how one can chose to let heartache overtake you i.e. the effects of not moving on with your life.  #3. People can be cold.  Although beautiful on the outside, something was rotten on the inside as she was raised to be alluring to men but taught not to love.  This book is filled with so many lessons. Awesome.

Oh, I totally agree, I forgot about Great Expectations but it is one of the greatest pieces of literature I've had the pleasure to read!
