What Does It Mean When Someone Says You Could Make An Onion Cry Just By Looking At It?
It is a rather tactless way to tell someone you think they are ugly. At least, that is my understanding.
They are basically saying cheer up because they think you look sad

ts a comical expression toward unattractiveness, but it really denotes insensitivity and immaturity. It made promote laughter for the one who expresses it, but it is never a good feeling to be the object of its intention.
Hopefully is all in fun and a practice all share in, because the positive side is laughter is good, especially when we can laugh at ourselves.
