How many copies of your published novel do you expect to sell?

If you were to publish your novel through an independent publisher, how many copies would you settle for over the standard 2-year contract period? Would 1,000 copies be acceptable as a minimum? 5,000 copies? Royalties would be paid to you in accordance with industry practice.

I'd have to sell 100,000 paperbacks, 10% royalty on a 4.99 cover price, ($49,990 royalties) to make it worth the hassle.

I could dream big in terms of how many copies I'd like to sell. It would be wonderful to be able to sell enough copies of my novel to earn as much on that book as I do in a year at my job. Who knows? Maybe it'll happen.

But as a first-time author, I'd be glad to have at least 5,000 as a minimum in sales, then work to sell as much over and above that as possible.
