Downloading microsoft office cannot be done for free legaly however you can download openoffice for free from openoffice.org
Open Office.Org is a great option, I use it all the time. MS Office is not free as a stand alone on your computer. However, MS Office is available as cloud computing and you can access it through your Windows Live account, It is a free account and has lots of apps available.
Also, Google has cloud computing available through its application Google Docs. It has an office suite that I use frequently.
If you would like to try out Open Office without installing it on your computer, it is also available in a free portable version from portableapps.com. I use both the installed and portable versions, have had no issues with either one.
