In the story "1001 Arabian nights" what nationality was Aladdin?
The story "Alladdin" was set in China, but since all the characters were Muslim, they must have belonged to the Muslim minority within the Chinese Empire, so I am guessing that he might have been Uighur.
Aladdin is the Arab view of what a Chinese boy is like. The original story of Aladdin came from Syria and is collected in 1001 Arabian Nights along with other stories from that and other areas. Although 1001 Nights is set in Arabia, the story of Aladdin is set in China - this is mentioned a number of times. From this one would think or assume that Aladdin was Chinese.
Ah, there's some interesting history on this compilation.
Aladdin, wasn't even originally part of Arabian Nights (or 1001 Nights, the names are not joined). He, along with some other famous stories were later added by a translator named Antoine Galland.
Aladdin's name is arabic. But, the original story is set in a Chinese city. His character is described as being explicitly chinese, even though the China in that tale is an Islamic culture and the characters all have Arabian names.
So, it makes you wonder if China was written in as a cultural mistake.
