Who is the greatest literary mind you have ever come across?
Any time period. Any genre.
Man, this is a tricky one! I think if I had to choose just one to be 'the greatest', it would have to be Paul Auster. I think his books are definitely literary, and he must have an incredible brain to have come up with some of the concepts he does.
Although - if I can be cheeky and choose two - it would be Shakespeare. Not only did he write those incrtedible plays, but he invented new words like 'eyeball' when the words of the time just wouldn't do - and we still use them today! Now that's got to be real evidence of a fantastic genius at work.
I've never actually read anything by Auster, so I'll definitely have to check out some of his work. I think Shakespeare is brilliant mind indeed, but if I had to choose my favorite it'd have to be James Joyce. I also love Hemingway, as well as J.D Salinger, if only for 'The Catcher in the Rye'.
There are so many to choose from, but some of my favorites are Tennessee Williams, Charles Schulz (yep, the guys who penned the Peanuts comic strips) and the Eastern European author Peter Nadas.
