What is a good word count for a hub?
I don't want to write a novel for a hub but I also don't want it being labeled substandard.
500-1,000 words around a central idea. If you find that the hub is getting long, or you spend too much time explaining one aspect of it, split it up into multiple hubs and link them together. Hubpages and Google like it when you write multiple hubs around a topic.
Yes, I agree that shooting for at least 500 words is ideal. You can split long hubs if you want and if the topic is separable. But I do not think there is harm in having really long hubs. Google loves pages with a lot of text.
Readers on the internet have a short attention span so you have to be careful with long hubs. Google may like them but readers may jump to something shorter. Break them up with lots of headers and some pictures to avoid TLDR (too long, didn't read).

What happened to my little blue tip box I have become so attached to? I let me know how many words I had, if an image was not clear enough, and let me know when my hub was presentable and ready to publish.

What constitutes as word count on a hub? When people talk about word counts on hubs, and the word count in the hub metrics, does that include the number of words in the comments?

I love the new cleaner hub creation interface! But I noticed that the Word Count is missing (or maybe I just don't know where to look for it). That was a helpful feature. Is that coming back?
