I seem to remember Snoopy using that line as an opener whenever he was typing his Great American Novel.

I also remember Snoopy writing the same line; however I was looking for the original writer's name. Please try again.

Why do you think Snoopy was not the original writer?

It is the first line of the book, Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'engle.  But I doubt she was the first to use it.

With a sentence as simple and common as this, how can anyone know when it was first used?

It was first written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton as the beginning of his 1830 novel Paul Clifford.
