E. B. White, the author of such beloved children's classics as Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan, was born in Mount Vernon, New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1921 and, five or six years later, joined the staff of The New Yorker magazine. E.B. White authored over seventeen books of prose and poetry and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1973. In addition to writing children's books, E. B. White also wrote books for adults, as well as writing poems and essays, and drawing sketches for The New Yorker magazine. Some of his other books include: One Man's Meat, The Second Tree from the Corner, Letters of E. B. White, The Essays of E. B. White, and Poems and Sketches of E. B. White.
JThomp42 has given it best, but he forgot one. Every decent writer I know has in their reference a copy of "Strunk and White." This is the punctuation, grammar, and style bible no writer should ever be without. Strunk was White's professor during White's college days. Then, later on, the two put their collective knowledge about the basics of writing into this one little book, nearly a pamphlet really, but everything you need to know about writing can be found in its pages. If you ever come across a copy grab it and never let it go. I'm told they're rare as hen's teeth these days but no one has ever come up with a more concise codifications of the basics of good writing than these two men.

There are plenty of good children's books that keep me interested and wouldn't mind reading it again. Personally, I love The Tale of Despereaux, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, and Persepolis.
