    Is The Joker Right?

If you have seen Christopher Nolan's, "The Dark Knight"  (if not go see it now) you may remember this quote from The Joker, "they're only as good as the world allows them to be.  When the chips are down, these civilized people will eat each other."

I'm going deeper into this with my next hub, but for now I just want to know; Do you agree or disagree?  You can refer to scenes form the movie if you want, but please incorporate the real world into your responses to the question; Are we only as good as the world allows us to be?  Thanks.

Most people are exactly how society, governments, the media, the T.V, the news/news papers, celebs, parents, family, friends, teachers etc tell them to be....The UK is going down hill fast, & that's our governments fault....If the people are to blame in some way, it's because in general their weak....So what we have now in the UK are mainly selfish uneducated ego led people chasing money, & they are completely brainwashed....In fact it's so insane that it's almost unbelievable, & if you don't believe me....Just go to any Stadium in the world, & watch 100,000 people all acting as one brainwashed ego mind....Worshipping some greedy selfish sports star/stars, or celeb/celebs....Next time you see one of your mates see what they want to talk to you about, i bet it'l be some bull***t crap off the T.V etc!lol....So we're only as good as how strong we are & if we dare to buck the trend, & go against the vast majority of sheep!....The whole world tells me, no insists, that i should be like all the rest of them, but i dare to be different because i see what's happening....Some people get paid millions, while millions or people are starving & getting slaughtered....Most people i know reckon "I'M" mad for caring, but i know I'm perfectly sane I'm just not brainwashed any more.

    Hey Dave

The U.S. isn't any better.  The same zombie like mentality exists here as well.  If you get a chance check out my profile.  Based on this response, I'm pretty sure you'd like the majority of my stuff.

What I think he means by this, as I have seen this first hand, is that most human beings become products of their surroundings given the right push. In the movie he tries to get to get the citizens of Gotham to expose their true selves by unleashing chaos all for his amusement .  Now to answer the question at hand, I will use a hypothetical scenario of being raised with morals, values and knowing right from wrong. We spend most of our lives obeying the rules put in front of us and helping out our fellow human beings, as most of us do. Well lets say that the government collapses and anarchy ensues. Not crazy, all hell breaking loose chaos (at first) but you know general disorder. What would happen to the man who has these morals hmmm after a bit he would join in. Not because he really wanted to (or maybe he secretly does) but because everyone else around him is participating to provide for themselves and he also needs to provide for himself. It is very similar to the person who does not want a man put to death yet would kill a man for trying to break in his home. It doesn't make us hypocrites it shows that we are in fact fallible and would do pretty much anything to survive. So yes we are only as well behaved as our world allows us to be.

It's a good quote, but ultimately I don't think it's true. And it's because we built the rules of society that are governing us. It stands to reason, then, that if laws/government were to fall apart, we would inevitably rebuild them. Yes, there would be violence in the mean time, but not everyone would devolve into a cannibal. More so, we would separate into smaller groups to protect ourselves. We're a pack species, so we would probably be more concerned with our own survival rather than looting or violence.

Having said that, this particular scene from the Dark Knight felt a bit unrealistic to me. In a city as damaged as Gotham, I feel like someone would have pushed the button. Without any way to know that Batman was going to save them, at least one morally deficient person would have stolen the controller.

I wrote a hub about this and I say the same thing; the button would have most likely been pushed. Check out the hub if you get the chance.  Thanks for the response.

I agree that most people would if the veneer of society failed. Absolutely; when survival is at stake, there are only primates.
