"For decades, much has been made of the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom. But in 2022, the national governments of both nations shared a somewhat less special accomplishment: earning the least confidence from their constituents of any G7 member country.

When Gallup first measured national confidence in governments around the world nearly two decades ago, both President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair were well into their terms in office. The governments they led retained extensive confidence domestically -- far more so than for almost all the rest of the G7 (Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Italy).

Fast forward to 2022, and the tables have turned. Roughly one in three adults in the U.K. (33%) and U.S. (31%) say they have confidence in their national governments: putting them at the bottom of the G7 countries.

As governments on both sides of the Atlantic have struggled, other administrations in G7 nations have solidified their positions among their electorates. In Europe, confidence in Italy’s government has almost doubled since 2019 (from 22% to 41% in 2022). Similarly, confidence in the French government has increased steadily since French President Emmanuel Macron came to power: rising from 37% in 2017 to 46% in 2022. In Olaf Scholz’s first full year as chancellor of Germany, he has continued Angela Merkel’s trend of high German confidence (61%) in government -- the highest confidence level in the G7.

Even though confidence in the Canadian government has slipped from its highs under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a majority (51%) nevertheless retain faith in it. In Japan, which ranked last among G7 countries between 2007 and 2012, confidence in government has since more than doubled to 43% in 2022.

Confidence in U.S. Government Continues Free Fall

The U.S. has seen a sharp decline in the public’s confidence in the national government over the past couple of years. In 2020, almost half (46%) of U.S. adults expressed faith in their government, likely boosted by the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But after President Joe Biden took office, confidence in the government slipped to 40% in 2021 and again to 31% in 2022. This is on par with the lowest rates of confidence measured in the U.S. government since Gallup started tracking it globally in 2006 -- with the other lows measured in 2013, 2016 and 2018 under former Presidents Barack Obama and
    Donald Trump.

Declining domestic confidence in the U.S. government has occurred alongside declining approval ratings on the world stage. Median global approval of U.S. leadership slipped to 41% in 2022, down from 45% in 2021 during Biden’s first year in office."

First of all, Sharlee, this is not 20 years ago. Of course, things have changed. The pandemic and the Ukraine has been responsible for the inflation that most Western economies have had to live with.

We exist in a state of political rivalry today that doesn't exist in other societies, that is part of the explanation. I really don't believe that anyone sitting in the President's can be held solely responsible.

Yep, the UK is in the same boat as the USA; but at least for the UK the future does look brighter.

Currently in the UK, the Conservative Government approval from the voting public is just 13%, and amongst Conservative voters only 26% (3rd July).

Currently in the UK, the Conservative trustworthy rating from the voting public is just 13%, and amongst Conservative voters only 29% (5th July).

Currently in the UK, the voting public’s opinion on the Conservative Government handling of their 5 key pledges for 2023 is at an all-time low, as follows (22nd June):

      •     NHS:  84% of the UK voting public think the current Conservative Government is doing badly on cutting NHS waiting lists.

      •    Inflation:  82% of the UK voting public think the current Conservative Government is doing badly on reducing inflation.

      •    Immigration:  76% of the UK voting public think the current Conservative Government is doing badly on removing asylum seekers who cross the channel in small boats quickly.

      •    National Debt:  71% of the UK voting public think the current Conservative Government is doing badly on reducing the national debt.

      •    Economy:  69% of the UK voting public think the current Conservative Government is doing badly on encouraging economic growth; and 67% think the Government is doing badly on creating better paid job opportunities.

With the next General Election less than 18 months away, unless the current Conservative Government can improve its popularity with the voting public it’s likely that by 2025 we’ll have a Socialist Government talking these issue; or whatever issues are topical by then.

Western governments are supposed to serve the people.

They are supposed to make the decisions that bring us Peace, not war.

They are supposed to consider how to best make the Nation prosperous.

The majority of people at home obviously do not feel the current Administration is making our nation more peaceful and prosperous with its governing and policymaking.

At home, I would say the current Administration has done more to create a divisive and divided Nation than any in living memory.

Whether it is the positions taken on transgender rights, or equity, or CRT being mandated in schools, the positions taken are not supported or wanted by the majority of the populace.

On the economic side, no one is happy with inflation and higher interest rates, confidence in the banks and the economy is at historic lows.

On the international side of things, the Biden Administration has alienated Saudi Arabia, agitated China, and started a war against Russia.

Unfortunately, things can get even worse, if the Biden Administration is given enough time, I am sure they will.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised with the decline in approval ratings.

"The majority of people at home obviously do not feel the current Administration is making our nation more peaceful and prosperous with its governing and policymaking."

The polls are showing great dissatisfaction with our current government. Which got much worse when Biden took office.

"But after President Joe Biden took office, confidence in the government slipped to 40% in 2021 and again to 31% in 2022. This is on par with the lowest rates of confidence measured in the U.S. government since Gallup started tracking it globally in 2006"

Most polls I have viewed follow this trend. It is possible Americans may be waking up to the mess the Country has become. Yes, we see leftist ideals being pushed by the current administration, as well as some media. But the man on the street is clearly speaking up.

And yes Ken, in my view it is getting, and will get much worse. The curtain is down on Biden's poor state of health, and I think Americans will choose a new path out of sheer desperation.  As you said Biden has gathered many negatives, and one would need to be in the dark not to recognize them.

I will keep faith that the majority of Americans will wake up, and do the right thing for the country.
