Heroes are looked at in different ways from cockpit fighters, to war heroes to Gandhi and Mandela who fought just causes. Mother Theresa left Albania with hardly anything and when she passed in her eighties, she had created the Sisters of Charity, an international and very powerful charity indeed!
Jet Lee once said that he was not a hero; that he knew a herbalist who tried all the herbs and poisons on himself, before giving them to anyone, and this great man not only saved many lives, but did this for years with no thought to himself!
I find all my heroes and heroines to be people who made tremendous sacrifices, whether it's Mandela, Gorbachev, Mother Theresa or those great ancient warriors of Chinese and Indian mythology. Indeed life itself has produced tremendous sacrifice - of the slaves in Africa - the freedom fighters in India and the Christian Martyrs of the West who stood up to tyranny and was executed as heretics.
You will no doubt find many other heroes of different causes. The list is endless. Much Love.
p.s. of course they are in movies too, as you so rightly pointed out, but they are at best, simply depicting what we know, like Brad Pitt playing Achilles, for instance.
