    I’m Looking at My Future

I watched as the younger version of me
    Laying under an open window
    Wrapped in a comforter
Involuntarily breathing and his heart beating
Fast asleep without a care in the world
No storm clouds brewing overhead in his young world
    No clashing of the Titans
    No War and Peace
His only worries consist of: School…Chores…& Clothes
Yeah…he’s wondering what he’s going to wear
For the rest of the week
I sat and wondered with night time vision…
    With all my talks…does
My frequent speech, I hope I reach, and teach
Him how to be, and become a better individual
A stronger black male, a fully functional
    A Sharing Caring…Provider
I thought back…While looking at my 16 yr old offspring
Smiling…cause of the joy he brings
What was I doing at 16 almost 17?
Under the roof of a single black female
    Who Nurtured…
    My fatherless…
No real MALE role modeled Nature
Raised as a specimen, in a Project called Mitchell’s
The visual, another mental note from my past
    Now Legible
I whispered in his ear be INCREDIBLE!
    No matter what you do
    Be better than I am
    Go beyond who I am
And travel further than where I am
I am daring him to be Exceptional
    I’m looking at my future
Wondering what his future could be
I press, pray, and hope he is nothing like me
I suggested to him, to be better than me
    At whatever it may be!

Awesome imagery and detail!  If this poem is a true reflection of your life, I would like to congratulate you for having such a message to give to your son smile

Absolutely beautiful...takes me back...then takes me forward, in my childrens lives and all the way back to my new grandchildren, gracing this world! Thank you for sharing.

This was inspiring. Outstanding vocabulary and flow. Very enjoyable and real. I loved your imagery, and vision. True art.

I agree with the others.  This is awsome.  I'm curious, why didn't you publish it as a hub?
