First, one needs to keep people engaged over a great chunk of time. So the author needs to be quite elaborate in characterization and plot, especially if he needs to come up with ironical reversals, dramatic irony or any such stuff, linking the older books with new ones in the series. Second, the author needs to be extremely ingenious in creating an entire new world with its set of rules, unique shades of characters to keep the readers engaged.
third, one needs to be very focused about the links between the individual books of the series. the author must keep loose ends hanging which he can wrap in next book of the series only to add on to further intrigue.
Lastly, one must really have an alternative source of income for he might never be sure if his series is going to be good for his finances. Even the famous ones often get popular pretty late in time.
