Chapter 24
When my staff came back from their lunch break, I must have looked shaken up, because they asked if something was wrong. I told them I was just stressed about getting everything done before the opening.
“Don’t worry. We’ll help you,” a curly-haired blonde named Savannah said. She was one of my baristas. Everyone else chimed in and agreed.
So, I sent some of them off to purchase some items from the general store as I supervised the others while they were stocking and cleaning.
That night, after everyone had left, I sat in a booth thinking about what Josh had said and how I had treated him since I met him. I didn’t mean to shut my emotions off or reject him in any way. Honestly, I was scared of getting hurt again. Trusting in someone completely isn’t easy after you’ve been lied to. Why build a foundation with someone when you know they’re just going to tear it all down? Why give someone your heart when they’ll just discard it for a shinier, prettier one in the future? I realized I would have to open myself up to explain why I had been acting the way I had been towards Josh, but that scared me.
Too bad we lived in the same small town and literally had businesses right next to each other, or I could just avoid him altogether. I sighed and locked up, spending a second looking above his bookstore, seeing his bedroom light glowing before I headed home.
